Kiev, Ukraine (CNN) -- The U.N. General Assembly on Thursday approved a resolution calling the Crimean referendum to secede from Ukraine invalid.
The vote on the nonbinding resolution was 100-11, with 58 countries abstaining.
It's the latest indication of Russia's isolation within the international community over its actions in Ukraine. Moscow formally annexed Ukraine's southern Crimea region last week, days after the controversial referendum in which a majority of Crimeans voted to leave Ukraine for Russia.
Adding to tensions, Russia now may have as many as 40,000 troops near its border with Ukraine, two U.S. officials told CNN on Thursday. The officials said that this estimate was largely based on satellite imagery and that a firm number is difficult to assess.
However, a spokesman for Ukraine's Council of National Security and Defense told CNN his government estimates 88,000 Russian troops are at the Ukrainian border.
U.S. officials said they believe the higher estimates may reflect Russian troops on alert farther to the east.

100-67 vote?
Not exactly an overwhelming condemnation seeing how many nations are tiny, despotic, and dirt poor.
UNGA resolutions are non-binding. So Russia is on the opposite of the majority here? It doesn’t care.
Oops. 100-69.
What’s the purpose of denying the referendum when the situation on the ground is what it is? Despite what the UN says, Russian controls the Crimea...and the vast majority on the people in Crimea are happy about it.
I guess the only people effected by this UN resolution are the map makers.
Hey! why can’t we get banned from the UN? that’a not fair!/S
What did they say about the Ukrainian referendum? Oh wait, never mind. I forgot they didn't have one.
That’s true! That goon was only impeached!
Has he been banned on FR? lol, j/k
“Could not find anybody named ‘Putin’”
Andy said; They have made their ruling, now let them enforce it.
OOOH, that ought to leave a mark!
That’s gonna leave a mark. /s
The ONLY thing that matters...
How did China vote?
11 countries voted against the resolution, including such defenders of freedom and liberty as Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, North Korea, Nicaragua, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.
“Has he (Putin) been banned on FR? lol, j/k”
I think the mods zotted 2ndDivisionVet by mistake :-). Problem has been rectified thankfully.
“11 countries voted against the resolution, including such defenders of freedom and liberty as Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, North Korea, Nicaragua, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.”
Aren’t those the same countries that comprise the UN Human Rights Commission? :)
As my grandma used to say, "that and a nickel will get you on the subway".
UN resolutions are meaningless, and I like it that way.
Wow! Now all it has to do is get by the Security Council for it to be actionable.
I’m surprised nobody has grabbed the freeper name Putin just for laughs. It could cause some heads to explode.
