Protests break out in Brazil

Demonstrators from both ends of Brazil's political spectrum clashed briefly Saturday in Rio, where leftists came to blows with a group commemorating 50 years since the military coup.

More than 2,000 people meanwhile demonstrated in Sao Paulo, sending out a message to President Dilma Rousseff which read, "Dilma, listen, there will be fighting at the (World) Cup," and there were smaller protests in various other Brazilian cities.

"Democracy doesn't exist in Brazil -- we don't have a majority but a slew of minorities, such as Indians and feminists, with Dilma in charge," activist Felipe Paulomo told AFP.

"Our government is a fraud. We want it out," shouted one man with the words "Family, God and Freedom" emblazoned on his shirt.

One protester held aloft a banner reading: "The Brazilian people are with the armed forces."

We were told in rio in November that the government had been in the barrios and slums and asked the community leaders what they needed in they way of community projects.

Then the government said the projects would be directly funded and funds would not be just dumped into the barrios. Mathis made the slum leaders mad since it set up controls that would prohibit them from taking their skim off the top.

I guess everyone is still mad at that.

1. Start with Third World Country
2. Add a bit of wealth from the sale of commodities
3. Make a big batch of popcorn
4. Sit back and enjoy the entertaining chaos

Anyone else notice that Spanish-colonized countries are always in upheaval? Home come Australia or British Virgin Islands don’t have leftist governments?

Because the Spanish and Portuguese treated their colonies like crap.

FIFA has a really great track record in picking World Cup sites of late, doesn’t it?

I predict within one of the next few WCs, they will have to move it to the US on short notice.

I think they’d rather die than see the United States get another World Cup.

Qatar is a joke, Russia will be a joke and Brazil, from what I understand, is behind in stadium construction and renovation.

Yeah, but there’s no other place that could pull it together on short notice.

And the 1994 WC is still the highest attended WC of all-time.

I know. But it’s American.

If they wanted a commercial success for their event instead of placing the World Cup in places where FIFA has a better chance of skimming ticket sales, they’d have been back here.

Brazil was Portuguese, but I think I know where you’re going with this.

Australia has it's share of Crazy Leftists in Charge.

And our Country sure didn't start out peaceful. There was that whole "American Revolution" Thing.

And then the War of 1812 invasion.

Then that Pretty Darn Big Civil War.
