Top US diplomat John Kerry arrived in London on Friday on an 11th-hour mission to head off a possible Russian annexation of Crimea on the heels of a breakaway vote by the Ukrainian region.
With the clock ticking down to Crimea's referendum on Sunday, Kerry was to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov seeking to put the brakes on any moves by Russian President Vladimir Putin to swiftly annex the peninsula.
Shortly before leaving the United States, the secretary of state admitted that it was all but impossible to stop the referendum organised by Crimea's self-declared leaders from going ahead and warned there was no question that the pro-Russian ethnic majority would vote to move closer to Moscow.
Shortly after arriving in London, Kerry paid a visit to British Prime Minister David Cameron at his Downing Street residence ahead of his talks with Lavrov.
Cameron urged Russia and Ukraine to negotiate over Crimea and warned that failure to do so could trigger sanctions from the West.
He said: "We want to see progress as much as you do. We want to see Ukrainians and the Russians talking to each other.
"And if they don't then there are going to have to be consequences."
Kerry said: "Hopefully, I think we're all hoping that we don't get pushed into a place where we have to do all this. But we'll see what happens."
World attention is now focused on what moves Putin may make on Monday following the vote. There are growing concerns that he may have further ambitions to seize other swathes of Ukraine.

Maybe he can throw one of his purple hearts over the fence between Ukraine and Crimea....that’ll do it.
Or Ukraine, if that’s what Putin wants.
Certainly not Lurch or his man-child boss
So what’s the point of the meeting?
I would have told you that... for only half of Kerry’s salary.
This is all just so much Kabuki theater. The Russians gave up on the Crimea and Ukraine to get us to let our guard down.
Obviously, they feel this is the time to take all the old Soviet buffer states back. We are disarming. We have a pussy president who will do nothing except talk, and they along with China are building their military as fast as they can.
I PRAY that adults come back to run the show in Washington and build our military back up before there is a shooting war, not after.
This was always going to happen. Putey has been planning this for years. I think he was toying with doing it when he went in and carved out S Ossetia from Georgia. Thats what he is doing in the Ukraine. We are not going to war over this. The Crimean population is in favor of re-uniting with Russia.
For everyone who is freaking out over this let me ask you a question: How upset are you that S Ossetia is with Russia and Georgia is still Georgia? Thats how upset you will be in 6 mos when the Crimea and the Ukraine are split.
Cross that new line. I double dog dare you to.
Maybe Kerry can hop in his Swift Boat and blockade Crimea.

Nothing will stop them because this administration only puts it’s boot on the necks of it’s own people.
This would be quite funny if it were not completely true.
Consider this. Russia and China are a team and Obeee is out to lunch.

OK, explain me this...
A mob overturns the democratically elected government in Kiev, declares itself to be the legitimate government, and that’s a “good” thing, because the new government is what the people want.
Pro-Russian forces in the Crimea don’t like the new government in Kiev, revolt, declare themselves the legitimate government of Crimea, schedule an election to join Russia, and that’s a “bad” thing, because the new government is what the people want.
I don’t get it.
“How upset are you that S Ossetia is with Russia and Georgia is still Georgia?”
Not at all. As for the neo-cons that want us to go to war over Crimea, when is a nation responsible for its own self defense? If the Ukrainians want to be free of Russia, why is it OUR responsibility to defend them. I don’t see any Ukrainians fighting to defend Crimea. Why should we?
Liberals always brag of pride and freedom, yet they are so cheated on. They always avoid responsabilities, rationalizing it to humane feelings or blaming Bush.
They are truly pathetic people. If they have a chance they will abort or rape a kid, but that is it. They are at the bottom of the Marxist food chain. North Korean Kim is getting cheated by his wife with the Chinese... but Putin never gets cheated on.
