When we did find a firm, it cost us more than 4,000 New Zealand dollars ($3,360) for them to do our U.S. taxes each year. We looked at the money we paid the accountants as the price we paid to retain our U.S. citizenship. But as we got older and U.S. tax laws became more convoluted, it just didn't seem worth it anymore.

$3400 just to report what you earn. Anyone else who did this would be in jail for theft.

Good riddance. If you don’t love your country enough to stay here then stay out.

Many banks and brokerages in places like Hong Kong, Zurich, Singapore, etc... will not take Americans as customers. The IRS and US Treasury are just too difficult to deal with, and Uncle Sam wants too much control and information on its citizens’ money.

During my renunciation, I broke down. It was like getting a divorce. America gave me my education, a good career path, and I came from a beautiful part of the country. This was very hard.

This sounds very shallow. Is that all America meant to her?

Interesting that revenue agencies in all these Socialist countries appear to be less burdensome and distressing than dealing with the IRS.

The US was built on people fleeing tyranny and what at the time was regarded as prohibitive taxation.

Now the US has become tyrannical (and has prohibitive taxation) and people are fleeing it.

It would be a breath of fresh air if FReepers blamed the tyranny rather than the people escaping from it.

It is better to secede from tyranny than escape from it. But these are ex-pats living abroad. They can’t turn their current piece of soil into a free state. They can only escape.

"'We're ostracized for being American'"

Well then...if this spineless, gutless puke doesn't have the fortitude to defend his nation's honor, by all means, he should renounce his so-called "citizenship".

I agree with my fellow dawg soldiers that if these lowlife cowards think so little of the blessing of American citizenship which was bestowed upon them, who needs 'em? One particular lying, cowardly FReeper punk comes to mind...I don't know if he's renounced his citizenship, but I wish he would. Then I wish he'd just disappear altogether, but he gets his jollies bashing his former nation, so that ain't gonna happen.

God Bless America!

Woof, woof! Dawg soldiers up!

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Weaklings too afraid and cowardly to stay and fight for what our fore fathers provided to us in order to ensure future generations can enjoy the same things they claim to have.

No use for any of them.

Our forefathers broke free from a country whose abuses they could no longer tolerate. In communist controlled East Germany one risked his life to leave.

As an expat for the last 14 years, I have never met another expat that gave up their US citizenship, and I have no idea why one would, unless the government was after them for tax.
I started my expat life in central Europe, learning more about how life had been under Communism. In 2009 I was ready for new pastures, and headed for the Philippines.
I live among the highest population of US expats as anywhere in the world, I do not know of a single one that hates the US, has other passports, or evading taxes. They, like myself, hate what is happening to America under a Marxist president, who, do not forget, was RE-elected.
We also explain to others what is happening in America, and why Obama is such a disaster. Few foreigners have any clue as to what is happening there.
We also enjoy seeing the world, and living new and interesting lives with far less money then we would need in the states. There is no way that I could live back there on Social Security, alone. That is probably why Walmart has only elderly greeters.
The frequent claims that you are staying to “fight” is just an empty word. There is nothing you can do but vote, and you have been outvoted, not to mention the rapid increase of minority and immigrant population. Traditional American’s will soon be outnumbered.
It is interesting to hear those of you who are stocking up on guns and ammo. It should be real interesting when you start a civil war. The last one was not very pretty.

The FR “dog in a manger’ gang hates my guts. They they are vile, childish, and hate-filled because we do not feel their pain. I no longer even read their hate and profanity. They are famous for taking my post out of context with their outright lies.

If I did not love America, why would I have been a daily reader, financial contributor, and poster on FR for the last 15 years?

Do not forget, America was founded by others who left their home countries.
Are the founding fathers also to be scorned?
I am one who can say, I did not leave my country. My country left me.

Most of us will stick around to try to save this great country, but some will leave if it turns into a socialist rathole.
