Newtown gunman's dad opens up in magazine article

NEW YORK (AP) — In his most extensive comments about the 2012 Connecticut school massacre, the father of gunman Adam Lanza describes his struggle to comprehend what his son did — an act that "couldn't get any more evil" — and how he now wishes that his son had never been born.

Peter Lanza also told The New Yorker magazine in a series of interviews last fall that he believes Adam would have killed him, too, if he had the chance. And he often contemplates what he could have done differently in his relationship with Adam, although he believes the killings couldn't have been predicted.

"Any variation on what I did and how my relationship was had to be good, because no outcome could be worse," Peter Lanza told the magazine in an article dated March 17. "You can't get any more evil. ... How much do I beat up on myself about the fact that he's my son? A lot."

He said he hadn't seen his son in two years when Adam killed 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in December 2012.

“He said he hadn’t seen his son in two years “

Well there is the first problem. Boys need a dad not hours of tv and video games.

“But Nancy Lanza wrote him an email saying Adam didn’t want to see him, despite her efforts to reason with him”

I never heard that the Virginia Tech shooter was on any prescriptions.

He may have stopped taking whatever medications he was on.
There were reports that the mother was planning to get him institutionalized.

If a man’s adult son refuses to see him, there’s not a lot he can do.

The kid was mentally disturbed. I don ‘t think a couple of visits with Dad would have made a whit of difference. There are sometimes just bad seeds.

Exactly, and precisely the condition that the columbine shooters were in.

They did not taper off those medications but cold turkeyed with horrible results.

If I remember correctly a year of tapering off these serotonin reuptake inhibitors is recommended...and much less often results in a psychotic break for the party thusly affected .

The New York Times has reported the killer was on a prescription medication, and authorities have said he was confined briefly several years ago for a mental episode. They also have confirmed that the “prescription drugs” found among his effects related to the treatment of psychological problems.

Dr. Peter Breggin, a prominent critic of psychiatric drugs and founder of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology, said even if Cho wasn’t taking psychiatric drugs the day of the shooting, “he might have been tipped over into violent madness weeks or months earlier by a drug like Prozac, Paxil, or Zoloft.”

Personally, I think we would be a lot better off without most psychiatrists……...

I surmise the problem started before dad stopped seeing him and that is my point. Dad left his son to be raised by a single mother with no masculine influence. A couple visits no, being part of his life, yes.

It’s a self-fulfilling prophesy though. A crazy person takes drugs intended for crazy people.
Coming off the drugs can make you suicidal and if you don’t fear the afterlife, they reason “Why not?”.

I think he was scared of the Demon I’m sure they would not have had a happy game of catch and a nice meal. He said there was not double he would have blown him away.

read the article, stop judging so fast
this guy basically hired a private investigator to help him try to stalk the kid so he could cross paths with him
the kid locked himself in the basement, wanted nothing to do with Dad and 2d wife

he was noncompliant with meds
may have been he was actually taking nothing

someone who does not want to take meds can trick you even if you stand there and watch them, which his Mom was probably not able to do

I’ve seen some really nice people have some really awful kids. I’ve seen some really nice kids who had parents with big problems. I’ve seen some really troubled kids with divorced parents. I’ve seen some really good kids with divorced parents. I grew up in the time frame when divorce became common. My own personal experience was, stay away from the boys whose parents were getting divorced. They were mad and scared and most boys don’t know how to deal with those emotions. So, they take it out on other boys. There’s something more going on with Lanza. He went against some liberal theory.
