LOUISVILLE, Ky. Facing life in federal prison with no chance at parole while carrying a conviction of raping and killing a 14-year-old Iraqi girl, a former U.S. soldier hanged himself in his cell in Arizona.
Steven Dale Green, 28, of Midland, Texas, did not leave a note explaining the reason for taking his own life over the weekend. He died five years after a federal jury spared him a death sentence in the attack on the teenage girl and the shotgun slaying of her mother, father and younger sister near Mahmoudiya, Iraq, in 2006.

Not at all. There is usually a coterie of police worshipers on FR who vigorously attack anyone who says anything bad about the police. Glad to avoid them.
In 1968, 1LT William Calley was involved in the mass murder of an entire village, and the only punishment he received was three and a half years of house arrest.
I still can't get my head around that one.
I disagree- He was a casualty of his own flawed morality. The conflict that he was engaged in didn’t cause him to rape that girl, or murder the family.
Maybe the prison system should provide the means for a lifer to remove himself in a more humane manner.

I hate it when people strive to excuse rape, it’s because of poverty, or stress, it’s Bush’s fault, it’s Obama’s fault, she asked for it.

I can see where some ‘abuses’ might be occasioned by the brutality of war, but raping a woman (or girl in this case) - no.
10’s of thousands of American soldiers have served in the Middle East. Less then a handful have raped children and killed innocent civilians.
I fear this evil person would have done this regardless of being in a war zone.
That is insane, I think in a civilian court you get 15 years.
He isn’t a victim, he is the bad guy.
