LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Facing life in federal prison with no chance at parole while carrying a conviction of raping and killing a 14-year-old Iraqi girl, a former U.S. soldier hanged himself in his cell in Arizona.

Steven Dale Green, 28, of Midland, Texas, did not leave a note explaining the reason for taking his own life over the weekend. He died five years after a federal jury spared him a death sentence in the attack on the teenage girl and the shotgun slaying of her mother, father and younger sister near Mahmoudiya, Iraq, in 2006.

If he wanted to do stuff like that he should have been a cop.

Regardless of what he did he’s still a casualty of a disastrous, wasteful war.

Decent of him to do what the justice system should have done in the first place.

yes I have sympathy.....we put these young men in impossible situations and expect them to act normally and sanely....I hope this young man asked for God’s forgiveness and I hope his family will find peace, as well as the extended family of the Iraqi family....

Me either. Rape a 14 year old. Shotgun her family dead. I don’t care if it’s in Iraq, Afghanistan, or, Detroit it’s pure evil and it needs to be removed from the Earth. Soldier or street thug, the result’s the same.

Would you be that sympathetic to a serial killer who had a less than brilliant childhood? I’m sure every murdering rapist scumbag could find a sob story to excuse what they did.

Or a Democrat. What’s the current amount of the Clinton death toll? 120? Something around there? Oh wait, I forgot Benghazi so it’s 124. And how is she treated? Oh Hillary must be our next President!

Jesse Spielman, Paul Cortez and James Barker are serving lengthy sentences in the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., for their roles in the attack. Each is eligible for parole in 2015.

What? 2015? Next year? For being involved in the mass murder of an entire family? What?

Sounds like a bad apple that shouldn't have been in the Army in the first place. He didn't have much of a chance with his upbringing, but that's no excuse.

Green spent several months obtaining a high school correspondence diploma and the Army granted him a "moral waiver" for his prior convictions.

Regardless of what he did?! He raped and killed a 14 year old child while wearing the uniform of the U.S. military. He wasn’t a casualty of war. He was a POS.

IBTZ.

Yeah. They were prosecuted under the UCMJ in 2006. l think they were involved only in the rape and not the murders. (Only. [*spits*] As if that weren’t bad enough.)

"Wasteful war?" Yep, now that we high-tailed it and handed the country over to the enemy, just like in Vietnam.

Story about new schools, amazing elections? No.

I’ve long been a believer in giving prisoners the option to remove themselves from the gene pool. Make the wherewithal available and let THEM decide.

Not at all. There is usually a coterie of police worshipers on FR who vigorously attack anyone who says anything bad about the police. Glad to avoid them.

"What? 2015? Next year? For being involved in the mass murder of an entire family? What?"

In 1968, 1LT William Calley was involved in the mass murder of an entire village, and the only punishment he received was three and a half years of house arrest.

I still can't get my head around that one.

I disagree- He was a casualty of his own flawed morality. The conflict that he was engaged in didn’t cause him to rape that girl, or murder the family.

Maybe the prison system should provide the means for a lifer to remove himself in a more humane manner.

“Regardless of what he did he’s still a casualty of a disastrous, wasteful war.”

I hate it when people strive to excuse rape, it’s because of poverty, or stress, it’s Bush’s fault, it’s Obama’s fault, she asked for it.

Please, give me a break.

I can see where some ‘abuses’ might be occasioned by the brutality of war, but raping a woman (or girl in this case) - no.

10’s of thousands of American soldiers have served in the Middle East. Less then a handful have raped children and killed innocent civilians.
I fear this evil person would have done this regardless of being in a war zone.
