The Obama Administrations former Homeland Security Chief has taken over the University of California. Janet Napolitano had zero experience leading a college before she became president of the University of California last year, Eric Kelderman wrote in The Chonicle of Higher Education on February 21, 2014. Yet after just four months on the job, Ms. Napolitano, 56, has outlined major goals for the system, including a reconsideration of tuition policies, improving cooperation with the other two higher-education systems in the state, ensuring the prominent role of research and graduate education, and making the campuses carbon-neutral by 2025.
She even has a slogan for her agenda: Teach for California, Research for the World.
Napolitano joins the unprecedented cadre of Obama Administration officials in academeat least two dozen. Moreover, their ready acceptance in the Ivory Tower is indicative of the political climate there.
Republican scholars cant get teaching jobs with much weightier academic credentials. Clearly, as the carbon-neutrality pledge indicates, having congenial views in academia carries much more weight.
Moreover, the enthusiasm over Napolitanos appointment hints that what is most prized in academic circles is not the ability to make scholarship but the ability to make rain.
None of her goals are unusual in higher education, but they would be challenging even if Ms. Napolitano had spent her entire career on a college campus, Kelderman wrote. That deficit on her résumé has not been a serious impediment so far, however, and may even be an asset, observers say, as she seeks to lead the system past the fiscal, operational, and political challenges it has faced since the recession.
Robert D. Samuels, president of the University-Council American Federation of Teachers, the union that represents the systems faculty members, said it was no accident that Ms. Napolitano was hired right after the federal budget cuts forced by sequestration.
She does have a close connection with the federal government and is a high-profile person who can deal with the governor, Samuels stated.
Ms. Napolitano, too, said she was relying on the breadth of her political skills and connections in securing support for the system, both in California and in Washington, Kelderman reported.
I have a lot of experience managing large public institutions, Napolitano claimed, adding that they all involve politics in some way or another; its not as if higher education is divorced from that.
The universities get bluer and the students get stupider...
That should be “red campuses get redder.” What disinformation. It is pure psy ops of them to call lefties “blue” and conservatives “red.”
Big Sis carries little-to-no-weight with conservatives. And the University of California system should consider where they will be if an election should upset their view of the future.
McCarthy was right.
Had a girlfriend back in 87 or so who went to Sonoma State taking teaching courses. She finally graduated and then started taking special ed courses. I asked her when she was going to finish and she just looked at me like I was stupid. She was on welfare, all tuition paid, child care at the college - decidely better deal than actually teaching.
Agreed. Ironic though, considering that “progressives” (actually COMMUNISTS by belief) yearn to divorce themselves from the stigma of communism by identifying democrat-controlled areas as blue, yet they embrace the IDEOLOGY so wholly...
Yes there was a time when we were the blue states and it was changed for that reason.
Your story doesn’t even remotely surprise me in our culture anymore. Sad, isn’t it?
She’ll put camera’s in the womens showers....
Showers are uni-sex these days probably
Heck some places let males and females share dorm rooms
Yep, and it was not that way with red/blue presidential maps until 1992.
1988 Red/Blue presidential map
It would be interesting to know who made that change, and we can guess why.
That’s not the campus. That’s the admin office
Tells me they see campi getting redder or losing paying students. I know tge kids around hee have either rejected scamollege or are in heavy mercenary bordering on prostitution activities for anyway to even get into college
Forget it if their parents have mo et and they’re lost if their names do t d d with Z. These kids don’t like BO. And that’s BEFORE they get the bill
The Harvard study says kids dont like this guy and his policies, catholic seminary enrollment is way up so is youth participation in antiabortion demos
Young adult labor participation is way Low unemployment up
This stupid paper thinks people are buying that these kids are rallying behind this lesbian money grabbing Obama crony
Wow
Because “Knowledge is Good” was taken.
They are now mere government tools for political/social indoctrination. Big Sis is just one of a dedicated cadre of trained Marxist apparatchiks now being moved into crucial power positions. Traditional Americans have been asleep longer than Rip Van Winkle. Like him they're discovering the world has greatly changed during their nap because their enemies remained wide awake and busy.
Colors weren’t fixed on political parties back in the day. The old tradition was party-in-White-House blue, other party red, if a third party carried any states, they got yellow or green.
What changed was some idiot wrote a book about the 2000 Presidential election that talked about “blue states” and “red states”, and the meme (yes, that’s the appropriate word here, a meaningless-idea-like thing) took hold.
If it upsets you, look at it this way: we won the Cold War and liberated the color red from the Commies. Red is a fine color, just ask any Nebraska fan.
“...and making the campuses carbon-neutral by 2025.”
Yup, that pretty much sums up what the idiotess is all about.
Perhaps eliminating all useless academic departments (thereby reducing faculty and admin by - roughly 95%) would be a more laudable goal.
if you didn’t build it... then you don’t need to meet any job qualifications either
What the hell is a carbon-neutral campus?
