full headline (too long for the title): Bevin offers different explanations of his signature on 2008 report; Responds to Paul's credibility comment

FRANKFORT — Dogged for a week about a 2008 report he signed that praised the bank bailout, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Matt Bevin offered reporters at the state capitol Tuesday different explanations about how his signature got on the report.

Since the news broke last week Bevin has struggled explaining why he signed off on the company report — and those explanations continued on Tuesday.

Bevin told CNHI reporter Ronnie Ellis that his signature was digitally placed on an investors report for one of Bevin’s former companies, an issue first reported by Politico last week.

“It wasn’t a signature it was a digital signature,” Bevin told Ellis while walking to a rally for Christians in the Capitol. “They’re submitted electronically. They always are.” Bevin also maintained that he doesn’t support the views in the document that he signed nor did he write the document.

An hour later, Bevin told Pure Politics that he signed every document that he was required by law to sign.

“I’ve signed many documents as president and CEO as required by law. I signed every single document that we were required to file every single one of them,” Bevin told Pure Politics after the rally in the Capitol rotunda. “I did not write any of the investment commentary for any of them.”

While Bevin has garnered Tea Party support in his primary campaign, he was dealt a blow Monday when U.S. Sen. Rand Paul told reporters that Bevin “hurt credibility” with the disclosure that he signed off on a report to investors in 2008 that praised the bank bailout.

Tuesday Bevin attempted to shrug off the questions of credibility from Paul by telling reporters to ask Paul about it — and then saying it’s Paul’s opinion.

“His opinion is his opinion, and everybody’s entitled to one,” Bevin told reporters.

Bevin conceded that the issue has distracted from his message, which most recently has focused on U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell voting to proceed with debate on a bill that raised the nation’s debt ceiling, which paved the way for the Senate Democrats in the majority to pass the measure on a party-line vote.

Bevin is letting the press get under his skin too much in the video and this is an opposing campaign's dream to use in campaign ads. He is letting this story get more legs than it should - this is actually the same explanation he has already given in a prior response - he should have said "I have already responded to this and I have nothing to ad to my previous statement" and not continue to respond and feed the press.

Mitch has seen Cornyn’s 43% poll and is dumping everything he can on Bevin when really, he should just resign.

Rand Paul is another PhonyCon Liberal trying to sandbag another Conservative candidate

Rand Paul supports Illegal Alien Amnesty and Mitch McConnell...and he is now attacking the Conservative candidate

Bevin’s explanation is pretty clear and concise, Randmesty

Rand Paul is not a Conservative. His followers are getting as bad as the Global Warming whackos

There is nothing contradictory about Bevin’s several comments on the subject. This is just a reporter, and faux conservative Rand Paul, trying to create something from nothing. They may succeed.

I think you are right but don’t you think KY voters are smart enough to see through these dirty McConnell tactics?

Paul a going way beyond just an endorsement of McConnell.

Paul fooled the voters of Ky, especially Tea Party voters.

It did not take long for him to be turned by the DC crowd.

It’s definitely cunning, but what’s “dirty” about it? His signature was on the documents which endorsed a policy he has made a central theme of his campaign of being against...however McConnell has or has not personally used it for his own benefit, that’s very damaging to Bevin’s campaign - his explanation that his signature was signed to documents that he doesn’t really endorse probably isn’t going to wash with the average person. I can certainly understand Bevin’s position as anyone who has been in a clerical position before knows they send out documents in the name of people who never actually read them on a routine basis...even auto generated by computer and sent out - but unfortunately you are still responsible for anything put out in your name if permission is given for documents to be sent out like that. I can’t imagine if McConnell’s signature appeared on a document sent out of his office this kind of explanation would be swept aside if it took a position that was a matter of controversy.

What’s done is done, however. Bevin needs to just say “I’ve answered that” and move on. It’s looking less likely he’s going to be able to win this primary (though never say never...things can change very quickly), but we don’t want him to destroy his viability to potentially run for public office again if he doesn’t. I’m still a bit skeptical of him but I’m more open to him now than in the past.

Paul was phony from the beginning. Constantly changing positions in the primary, etc. All about whatever he thinks will benefit him politically.

Exactly!! Stay focused on the issue(s) of turn coat, 0bama enabler Midge McConnell.

What’s dirty about it is that it’s in ‘extremis’. Perhaps you don’t know what that is.

TARP was about bailing out investment banks and their criminal malfeasance, not investors.

Bevin was in extremis with his investors.

McConnell was aiding and abetting his cronies in the banks and covered up their crime.

Big difference.

I will give you an example.

A gang blows up civilians in a public place. Bevin reacts on the scene and tells all medical hands available to respond. Some dolt asks if the victims have medical insurance. A person from Bevin’s camp responds “he doesn’t give a damn about health insurance right now!”.

The gang that blew up the innocents are under threat of retaliation by a crowd that witnessed their crime. McConnell responds on the scene by having an official police van load the gang and take then to safety.

I think KY voters are smart enough to see through this claptrap. They don’t want the democrat and they don’t want the other democrat McConnell.

The undecideds should break for Bevin and put him over the top.

This out of context snip from your post had me laughing so hard my sides hurt. I love Kentucky but my fellow Kentuckians aren’t the brightest bunch.

> “I love Kentucky but my fellow Kentuckians aren’t the brightest bunch.”

One could say that about most states.

‘Smart’ here doesn’t mean highly intelligent. It means knowing what is appropriate.

For example, wearing a bikini to a funeral is not considered smart; it’s considered out of place and disrespectful.

Those who wear serious attire to a funeral are ‘smart’, they know what is appropriate to wear.

I think KY voters know how to be with elections which makes them smart; not right, just smart.

Democrats are intelligent, in a cunning shrewd way, not in a smart way.

I say this because Bevin won a straw poll by a large margin in an important KY county last December. I say this because voters there appear to be rejecting McConnell.

KY has voted for 2 republican senators. One of them is in truth a democrat. But the fact is that voters there have rejected the democrat message. That makes them smart.

The fact that the voters in KY are turning away from McConnell is smart.

Because of all these things I think Grimes will come close but not win. McConnell will not win. That leaves Bevin. The undecideds should break for Bevin.

I agree. He's got to explain it better and turn it back on McConnell, who's still casting votes that will bankrupt the US.

Bevin's new to politics. He had to know he's get challenges like this thrown at him. It looks like we'll get to see if he's up to explaining why he doesn't have a credibility problem. It's important because too many people without voting records have made great promises then disappointed us.

i'm hopeful.. that said, *itch McConnell, is terrorized Matt Bevin/TEA party.
i imagine MM probably thought, "Matt who?" initially; while swatting 'em away.
It's MM's record on betrayal of KY's mores; MB should address, RP has gone GOP/e.

Paul was phony from the beginning. Constantly changing positions in the primary, etc. Absolute lie. Please give us proof of something that Rand Paul changed positions on during the primary. I faintly remembering that you were a supporter of Charles Merwin "Trey" Grayson III. And that, of course, didn't work out well for you. (See also: little Richie "the convict" Farmer.)
