ASHBURN, Virginia -
The latest back-and-forth over the Washington Redskins name includes a stern letter from two lawmakers and a new "community voices" campaign from the team.
A letter sent Monday from Congressman Tom Cole [R-Oklahoma] and Senator Maria Cantwell [D-Washington], tells NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that the league is on "the wrong side of history" and mentions the league's tax-exempt status.
Cantwell chairs the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. Cole is a member of the Chickasaw Nation.
The lawmakers specifically objected to Goodell's Super Bowl week news conference, when he said the Redskins name has been "presented in a way that honors Native Americans."
There is a $17 trillion debt, and you are worried about a NFL teams name.

I’m in Oklahoma, but fortunately he’s not my congressman. This stupidity is liable to get him a nice challenge in the primary... in this state.

I always ask in response if they think that any nation is eternal. Isn't there always a demise and fall of every nation? I then ask them where they think our country is, considering the horrific stats on crime, corruption, decline in real learning, and loss of all principle.
Again, who is on the right side of history?

Ol’ Chickasaw Tom is ignorant of history. The Redskins were once the Boston Braves. They were renamed the Redskins to honor their coach, Willie “Lone Star” Dietz, a Sioux, a graduate of the Carlisle Indian School and a former teammate of Jim Thorpe. Why isn’t Tom standing in solidarity with Willie?
Football is a kids game, if Mr. Cole doesn’t like the name of the team and spoils the enjoyment of it for him, he doesn’t have to go to the games.
The country faces a lot of problems, the nicknames of ball teams doesn’t meet the list of priorities.
This isn’t a good sign for the GOP to be involved in this, what year did Sen. Specter look to open up Senate hearing to determine if the New England team was cheating?

Yes, the Redskins are on the wrong side of history, but not for the reason the author thinks. They should have taken Andrew Luck in the draft instead of RG III.
