So if there is no family source of support, and that is most often the case for over 50 workers, do they just end up on unemployment for long periods of time and either use a sort of welfare or figure out how to get on disability if it continues long enough? This is for those cases where they don’t have a married partner to provide a source of support. In married cases I presume by and large it simply results in additional burdens for the other partner the majority of the time.

That’s just bloody great. I lost my job last Thursday and have 4 kids and a wife to support.

This is news that could make one consider giving up.

They end up on unemployment till it runs out. Then if Walmart will hire them or maybe Lowes, they MIGHT find a job.

Lately though, Walmart has downsized their Sam’s Club staff.

The pay is not great, but at least Walmart is one of the very few places that does not discriminate against older workers.

Please don’t let anything I post be discouraging to you. I never mean for that happen. I just tried to bring the reality of older workers to the thread.

You have a family to support, and God knows your needs. Prayer is always the best answer. I don’t believe God would forsake your family if you call on Him for help. He will provide in some way.

Riches may not come our way, but God will meet our needs. I do believe that.

And if they don’t find something at Lowe’s or Walmart, do they usually end up on welfare or disability or do they end up homeless and dying of starvation and lack of water? Which is more likely, if they are not married and presuming no other family support, which again is fairly standard for those over 50.

I’m not sure. Most likely they end up moving into low-income housing (which the government provides). Maybe getting food stamps. There are programs too which help to pay utility bills for those who need it.

Fortunately, I’m still working, though over 50. But I do know of others in this situation. People can rant against gov’t. handouts, but when they themselves end up needing help, they are glad for the help.

The problem is...there are so few jobs, so employers have their pick of job applicants. They most always pick the younger ones nowadays. And I do believe part (if not most) of the reason is older workers cause the health premiums to rise in the insurance pool.

Anyway, the best solution is if over 50 workers have a skill which will help them to be self-employed. Something needed by the public. If they can work using those skills, they can have a more stress-free life (compared to working for a boss) while at the same time continuing to have an income.

I don’t see how borrowing to pay for a house or those over-priced cars causes the poor job situation. The poor job situation is from the opium of Big Government sucking wealth out of the economy through over regulation. When government gets bigger, it creates more government workers looking for something to justify their employment. What better way than to create more regulations. Then, you can work at enforcing those regulations.
