Governments could slow or even reverse the growing obesity epidemic if they introduced more regulation into the global market for fast foods such as burgers, chips and fizzy drinks, researchers said on Monday.

A study published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization (WHO) suggested that if governments took firmer action, they could start to prevent people becoming overweight and obese - conditions with serious long-term consequences such as diabetes, heart diseases and cancer.

They are right. I for one cannot be relied on to make the correct food choices for my personal health. I believe Sven the Swedish Cabana boy should be assigned as my very own personal food Nazi. He must hand feed me all the healthful foods I will not eat for myself and must use positive reinforcement to train me away from junk food. Foot massages perhaps?

I agree with you that fast food restaurants do not put 100% of their food knowledge in making healthier (and more expensive) ingredients taste great. They want foods that can be cheaply obtained, distributed and prepared easily, and not have much risk of going bad. Salt, yucky fake sweetness and grease hook people to the taste.

yes. that does indeed sound like the recipe (add a bunch of chemicals and you get your usual drive thru burger)

I really do believe they COULD offer some healtier items ...
Why should they, because you like them?
I like fast food just the way it is (or was) and I'm tired of people like you telling me what's good for me. Hell, I even like (gasp) white bread buns.
If you don't like it, don't eat it. Go feckin' graze wherever "healthy" people eat.

I’d rather Sven ate the foods that the government wants us to eat and I’ll go back and eat what I like, in moderation, the stuff without additives and chemicals.

Stuff like butter, real cream, real vegetables, meat that’s not pumped up with things.

Actually, what they do is produce food that people like and will consume in mass quantities. The standards remain

For the sake of change, they constantly introduce new products so thee is some variety.

Maybe they should switch all fast food restaurants over to government-owned “Carl’s Jr.” franchises.

That explains the periodic resurgence of the McRib sandwich...

People get fat because they can. In olden times you could spot a person of means by his girth, a man of stomach.

In prosperous times all except the very poor get fat, in lean times everyone gets skinny except the prosperous.

We live in unusual times where the prosperous get skinny and the poor get fat, on someone elses dime.

Everyone knows junk food is bad for us. The real problem is that the “healthy” food that the goverment guidelines tell us we should be eating instead are just as bad. So when people decide they want to healthy and try the low-fat, high-carb crap that is supposed to be good for them, they don’t feel any better. It’s no wonder that they give up and go back to eating junk.

What we need to do is either to fix the guidelines, get the government out of the business of making dietary recommendations, or just stop paying attention.

My money is on option #3. And given the rapid growth of the real-food, low-carb, paleo food movement, I’m not alone.

yes. i agree that you should continue to enjoy the stuff they serve

i only hope they will add a couple of healthier choices for me, is all.... they can list them down at the bottom of the menu and I will even wait a few minutes for them to be prepared if necessary

if they don’t add a couple healthier items to the menu..., then yes i will keep away...

(you’d THINK that the free market forces would see to this ... but I’m not a health food freak... I just want to avoid getting sick and I do barf up ...almost immediately...McD’s.... I can eat a BurgerKing double whopper but still don’t care for the white bread ... why couldn’t they at least offer a choice on breads?

anyway, don’t worry about ME closing down your favorite grease pit. I believe you should continue to have all the drive thrus available for you that you like

I can make my own chow at home (and it tastes a lot better than ALL the fast food places, always does when you do it up the way you like for yourself)

happiness,

“I always thought lack of exercise and too many calories was the cause. silly me”

Telling people who are overweight that they need to eat less and exercise more makes as much sense as telling people who are constipated that they need to eat less and poop more. It’s technically true, but it totally ignores consideration of the actual causes.

Lack of regulation of fast food fueling obesity epidemic, study says

Wow so much for personal responsibility. Replace fast food and obesity with , sugar, alcohol, recreational drugs, trans fat, cigarettes, you pick your favorite and you too can be the author of this garbage.

The study was done by WHO - it is about as useful as used toilet paper. It once served a purpose and now should be discarded.

These folks think they are original thinkers :-
Louis Antoine de Saint-Just (25 August 1767 – 28 July 1794)
“ The poor man is superior to government and the powers of the world; he should address them as a master. We must have a system which puts all these principles in practice and assures comfort to the entire people. Opulence is a crime : it consists in supporting fewer children, whether one’s own or adopted, than one has thousands of francs of income.

. . Children shall belong to their mother, provided she has suckled them herself, until they are five years old ; after that they shall belong to the republic until death.

The mother who does not suckle her children ceases to be a mother in the eyes of the country. Child and citizen belong to the country, and a common instruction is essential. Children shall be brought up in the love of silence and scorn for fine talkers. They shall be trained in laconic speech. Games shall be prohibited in which they declaim, and they shall be habituated to simple truth.

The boys shall be educated, from the age of five to sixteen, by the country; from five to ten they shall learn to read, write, and swim. No one shall strike or caress a child. They shall be taught what is good and left to nature. He who strikes a child shall be banished.

The children shall eat together and shall live on roots, fruit, vegetables, milk, cheese, bread, and water. The teachers of children from [Page 453] five to ten years old shall not be less than sixty years of age. . . . The education of children from ten to sixteen shall be military and agricultural.”

Although a major figure during the Reign of Terror, he was eventually Guillotined.Marx and Engels studied his works.
