Food-stamp cut, bad weather blamed by Wal-Mart for profit warning

Companies blame all sorts of things for profit warnings, real and imagined. There’s at least some reason to believe Wal-Mart Stores WMT -1.14% when it blames food stamp cuts and bad weather.

First, the assertion that food-stamp cuts impacted the company’s bottom line: On Nov. 1, the Great Recession boost to the food-stamp program — known as the Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program — expired.

That meant as much as a 5.5% reduction in benefits. A family of four, for example, would get $36 a month less.

I’ve read where Walmart gets 40 something percent of the SNAP business.

BTW. Tomorrow at Walmart is going to be a banner day. 1st of the month and those EBT cards all charged up.

They’ll be a lot in there at midnight, but the rest will be in there come 11AM sharp - they get cranky if they have to get up before then.

So if you have to shop, be outta that store before, say 10AM.

It got a little dicey when the EBT cards stopped working

so this is why the shelves in Wal-Mart are empty! they are not restocking because food stamp recipients are not buying as much... so i, with cash, cannot purchase the things i want because the shelves are empty... Harris Teeter, here i come...

Silly me, I always thought “bad weather” was a reason to have a run on a food store to stock up with tons of stuff one does not need on a sunny day.

I think that’s outdated info.
I know in Indiana the state changed the system to avoid the rush.
Now EBT refills take place all during the month depending on your name.

How is a 57% increase a cut?

That explains that fat b!tch I saw this morning in there with her unemployed BF with two carts of groceries of junk food and stuff. Hid her card as she swiped and smiled as she did it.

A travesty. Anything to protect the identity and blatant worthlessness of its useless people.

A good time to shop is the day before the last day of the month. Some monthly pensions are deposited the last day of the month, so the shelves are usually well stocked in anticipation of that.

It’s more for safety of the store employees.
Having the entire entitlement army charge in at once is ugly.
I don’t blame them for changing it.

Maybe, sounds high.

For comparison Walmart makes about 3% on the food stamp purchases made there, while the media gets about 5% of ALL welfare spending (product advertising).

There is a chance for some heavy snow coming into the northern Ohio valley early next week, if you are anywhere near there I recommend getting anything you need now. The last winter storm that came through the only thing left in Kroger’s entire meat aisle was some Laura Lean stuff.

Not even panicked well off folks want to spend that much for a cut of beef I guess.

Don’t get me started! My cart contains whole grain flour, yeast, full fat Greek yogurt, sweet potatoes, bananas, romaine, cheese, etc. I can’t afford (not that I want it) all that processed convenience food. I treated the family last week to a quart of strawberries. Their carts are overflowing, literally, with crap. And guess what? We get to pay for their health problems that are a direct result of their eating habits!

Toldya so.

BIG grocery retailers (Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, etc. etc.) are even BIGGER shills for Food Stamps than the welfare clients.

nationally, it’s about 18%, I really should have qualified. For example, my sister has a friend who manages the WM here. She says that 43% of their grocery business there is EBT
