The late Judge Robert Bork wrote a controversial book in 1996 called Slouching Toward Gomorrah Modern Liberalism and American Decline He was pilloried in the mainstream media for being a negative conservative alarmist.
That same year, former Reagan cabinet member, Dr. William Bennett published his The Book of Virtues. In it he attempted to call our attention to a process he termed the coarsening of the culture. He was likewise raked over the coals for attempting to point out what, in retrospect, anyone with half a brain would recognize as early attempts to prevent the slide that has brought us to this sad and lamentable place where we now find the former shining city on a hill.
Some of you older folks may recall that in 2003, Dr. Bennett admitted to having a gambling addiction during the period around the publication of his book. He was again publicly castigated for his transgression.
That would have also been around the same time when Bill Clinton was being fellated in the Oral er Oval Office by one of his young subordinates, one Miss Lewinsky. DNA testing of some ahh spots on one of Miss Lewinsky's dresses proved to be of Clintonian origin.
During Clinton's ensuing impeachment which most of the media called various names synonymous with frivolous he vehemently denied his transgression and does so even today. As much as they tried, the leftist media could not completely ignore a congressional impeachment proceeding. But they did all they could to downplay the seriousness and the impact of it on Clinton's presidency.
(It came out later that the Israelis had Osama bin Laden in their sights 3 different times and, preoccupied covering his "tracks" in l'affaire Lewinsky, Clinton declined to take action. One can only guess how his failure to act might have impacted the events of 9/11/2001! It's entirely possible that 9/11 might not have happened and over 3,000 Americans might not have perished that day!)
The difference? I don't recall that Dr. Bennett was ever accused of being fellated by subordinate females in his office but was set upon by the media for his admitted sin of gambling. Bill Clinton was given a pass by this same media, setting the stage for their worshipful, genuflecting coverage (covering up) of Obama and his ongoing criminal enterprise.
Forgive the foregoing digressions. I inserted them in an effort to head off the inevitable beat down and cries of hypocrisy coming this way from the leftists who might stumble across my rant.
Let me cut to the chase.
Nearly all the virtues we may have possessed in 1996 are now but a distant memory for a disturbing number of those around us. The most cursory trip into the internet will reveal them. You only need to read some of the stories coming out of the Obama administration: Benghazi, IRS harassment of opponents, generally Democrat vote buying and outright fraud, the failure to hold accountable those around him who are either incompetent or, as in the case of Obamacare, following his deceitful orders to create a base for the single-payer system he and they wanted all along. Of course, politicians of all stripes have lied for eons: Obama and his mendatious minions have honed it into an art form.
I refused to watch the so-called State of the Union fib fest but I do hope some of you kept a tally of the Chief Pontificators prevarications. I suspect the list consumed several large tablets. I could go on but space and the TV induced 90 second attention span of the average American is limited.
Which brings me to TV and a phenomenon to which Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan introduced in his book The Medium is The Message.
If the coarsening of the culture was moving along briskly in 1996, today it is hypersonic. We plop down to watch TV only to find Janet Jackson having a wardrobe malfunction; a nearly nude Miley Cyrus twerking with some guy in prison stripes and stroking herself in private places once reserved for the bedroom; the Grammy Awards so slanted to the left wing, liberal, libertine and gay agenda that at least one Christian performer left the building in protest. We're getting the message alright.
While earlier American presidents have come close, we're heading straight into uncharted waters. But other nations have led the way: Greece, Rome, The Wiemar Republic era in Germany, Sodom and, of course, Gomorrah. I'm afraid I have no choice but to end this with some really bad news: We're no longer slouching toward Gomorrah. We have ARRIVED!
PS: File this under Preaching to the Choir Again
Will someone write a book “Gomorrah, next stop. End of the line!”?
Bork covered the details of the takeover of the dem party with essentially the cultural elitists riding to power on the back of the boomers.. The final battle was at the '68 dem convention with the boomers rioting on the streets of Chicago and the cultural elitists rioting on the floor of the convention. One of the main combatants there was Dan Rather who was roughed up and knocked to the floor.
After the take over of the dem party, the GOP used Nixon's Southern Strategy to bring the cultural populists out of the dem party into the GOP. Nixon's Silent Majority of the 70s morphed into the Moral Majority of the 80s.
So the GOP rode to power on this coalition between the economic elitists and cultural populists.
Unfortunately, the coalition is now falling apart. The GOP elitists and the GOP populists are in a fight to the death.
As an add-on, let me mention Bork's definition of the cultural elitists or cultural Marxists, "those who make their living off of words and language".
This would include entertainers like actors and Hollywood and the music industry, anybody in the "arts". Also educators. Lawyers like the ABA. Media people. Bureaucrats.

Even worse, they don't know WHAT it is, either. Here's a clue for them:
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20)
[ The trolls dont know where GOMORRAH is ]
It is in the bible silly...
When Clinton was re-elected in 1996, I knew that our nation’s path was destined for a race to the abyss. The facts were ALL there, all the disclosures about his rapes and infidelities seemed to make him more popular, and to my chagrin, even Christians were in on that act, saying that who are we to judge? We are to judge those who would lead us by a more strict measurement than we do one another, I would think. Of ALL the places one would want a self-controlled, moral charactered-man/woman, it would be in the WH.
Christians fell for the same old ploy almost every candidate employs: calling themselves a born again Christian, talking about reading their Bibles and how that book was important in their lives. REALLY? That was really evident, wasn’t it? I could understand being elected the first time, but the 2nd? Same with Obama. We knew he was no true believer, but the same old ploys were used and the leftwing nut Christians just had to save their boy. There is NO evidence whatsoever in ANYTHING this president does that marks his so-called christian testimony as true. But people are still afraid to say that he isn’t. No wonder our churches have no witness, our homes are failing, our once sound institutions have crumbled. There are no godly men left to make a firm stand, and the VERY few who do are equally criticized by so-called christians who say that real christians should not sully their names by running for office. It has ceased to amaze me that some of the very so-called Christians who lament the decline of our culture denigrate any christian who wants to try to save our country by serving in a godly manner, hoping to help turn the culture back. We have no one to blame but ourselves if this doesn’t change, and soon.
Yes, we will “pick ourselves up again” indeed, our collapse is going to be rough but the result I believe will be very positive at the other side. So, with a healthy dose of fear but also optimism of the future I am resolved to not having a boring old age!
Amen to all you wrote!
This is why I’m against going back to the ‘old values’ of America. We can’t go back and trying to go back will only cripple us more. “The good old days” had a lot of problems as well. Frankly moving full speed ahead is exhilarating.
