Syria's Assad slams Saudi ideology as 'threat to world'

Damascus (AFP) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad warned during a meeting in Damascus on Wednesday with Iran's foreign minister that Saudi Arabia's political and religious ideology is "a threat to the world," state television reported.

He was referring to Wahhabism, an ultra-conservative Sunni Muslim tradition which is predominant in Saudi Arabia, a key backer of Syria's revolt against Assad.

"President Assad warns during his meeting with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of the threat posed by Wahhabi thinking to all the world, not just to the region," the report said.

"The Syrian people and some peoples in the region know how serious the threat posed by Wahhabism is, and everyone must contribute to the confrontation against it and to eradicating it from the root," said Assad, who belongs to the Alawite offshoot of Shiite Islam.

The comments came amid ongoing tensions between Syria and Saudi Arabia, which are fiercely opposed to each other.

Assad's meeting with Zarif, top diplomat of Syria's chief regional ally Iran, comes less than a week before the so-called Geneva II peace conference, which is aimed at ending the conflict in Syria that has killed 130,000 people in nearly three years.

And that’s saying something. I always thought Bashar Assad wasn’t as bright as his father was.

If he was smart, he’d explicitly link Wahhabism and 9/11.

I give Assad credit for putting his finger directly on the problem which is more than any feckless American leader will do. He's also smart enough to give up his chemical weapons stockpile, now that the Saudis are using them in his country.

“I’m not advocating on part of either radical group but there is a huge difference between militants taking on US military in the Middle East and another group, killing civilians en-masse in America and Russia.”

If the IRI thought they could successfully pull it off & get away with it, they would. Instead, they finance attacks and cooperate to help others achieve that goal.

It’s so simple.

This is why many formerly backward countries are moving ahead; their family structures are geared toward power and success through professional lives as well as marital alliances and unlike us, they are actually uninterested in being politically correct or ‘nice,’ but actually CARE about the well being of their family members.

Whooooa, Assad to Iran, the Wahhabi is a threat? Who does he think runs Iran? All those Mullahs brought in by Khomeini were Wahhabis from Saudi Arabia. The Iranians I know wish those Mullahs would get the hell out of Iran.

Wahhabism is banned in Iran so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.
