Syria's Assad slams Saudi ideology as 'threat to world'

Damascus (AFP) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad warned during a meeting in Damascus on Wednesday with Iran's foreign minister that Saudi Arabia's political and religious ideology is "a threat to the world," state television reported.

He was referring to Wahhabism, an ultra-conservative Sunni Muslim tradition which is predominant in Saudi Arabia, a key backer of Syria's revolt against Assad.

"President Assad warns during his meeting with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of the threat posed by Wahhabi thinking to all the world, not just to the region," the report said.

"The Syrian people and some peoples in the region know how serious the threat posed by Wahhabism is, and everyone must contribute to the confrontation against it and to eradicating it from the root," said Assad, who belongs to the Alawite offshoot of Shiite Islam.

The comments came amid ongoing tensions between Syria and Saudi Arabia, which are fiercely opposed to each other.

Assad's meeting with Zarif, top diplomat of Syria's chief regional ally Iran, comes less than a week before the so-called Geneva II peace conference, which is aimed at ending the conflict in Syria that has killed 130,000 people in nearly three years.

If he was smart, he’d explicitly link Wahhabism and 9/11.

Any and all Islam is antithetical to, and irreconcilable with the rest of the world.

Assad is a secularist and an ally of Syrian Christians.

Ha. Well, that statement ensures the flow of more $$$ from Khamenei, whose ambitions are no different from the Wahabbis

With the exception of Israel, there are no good players in the Middle East.

But it were Wahabbis who bombed NYC and Pentagon on 9/11 and took Russian schoolchildren hostage in Beslan, not Khamenei.

“Assad’s ideology is
Me - Power; Cost - irrelevant.”

That’s how things work over there. That is why Iraq is falling to Al-Qaida and Afghanistan will always be a crap hole.

Assad knows the only way to keep ancient enemies from killing each other is to make them fear you more than each other. The Russians understood this too in places like Czechoslovakia and Romania.

unfortunately for the Middle East and decades of U.S. Middle East foreign policy, Assad is correct

unfortunately also, the theocrats in Iran are no better; just a Shia version of radical fundamentalist Islam

It was the IRI (Khamenie) who allowed some of the terrorists safe passage thru Iran

And it was the IRI who financed the bombing of Khobar Towers, Beirut Barracks Bombing, and the IRI who killed & maimed tens of thousands of Americans in Iraq & Afghanistan with Iranian made IED’s and through their tutelage having others do it.
