Complete Headline: Signature Count Begins in Effort to Overturn Calif. Law That Lets Boys Use Girls' Bathrooms, Play on Girls Sports Teams
The California Secretary of States press office confirmed on Wednesday that Secretary Debra Bowen has given all 58 counties in the state until Feb. 24 to count and verify every signature in a petition campaign to let voters decide whether a law that gives students the right to use facilities and take part in sports and other activities based on their gender identity and not their biological sex stands.
Assembly Bill 1266, the School Success and Opportunity Act, was passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in August 2013.
The law, which is designed to protect transgender students, states, in part, a pupil shall be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athlete teams and competition, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupils records.
This means that a male student, for example, can play the girls basketball team if he identifies as a female and vice versa if they make said team.
A coalition of parents, students, non-profits and faith groups who oppose the law launched a petition drive, which under California law allows voters to challenge a state law if the secretary of state certifies that the campaign has met or exceeded the 504,760-signature threshold.
Karen England, a spokesperson for Privacy for All Students (PFAS), told CNSNews.com that the group has collected more than 600,000 signatures.

You don't need to worry ... cause if this referendum passes, we'll just ignore it like we did the one on gay marriage!
Why would a boy want to use the girls bathroom? Can you imagine the grief they’ll get around school for forgetting to put down the seat after peeing?
Why bother? Even if you win, some liberal judge will just rule that they have a constitutional right to do so and the the change will be thrown out (see gay marriage)...
The law is like Obamacare, severe liberal overreach that will backfire politically. Frankly, as a Californian, I am more interested in an initiative to overturn the plastic bag ban.
It wouldn't be long before nearly 100% of the athletes were men who identify as women.
any plan to push this should just make all sports co-ed and cut to the chase, because the end result will be nothing but men playing sports either way.
Have we forgotten that girls or women can use boys or mens bathroom by law? Or has that changed.
Since your gender identity can change on a whim nothing would prevent the whole mens team from suddenly identifying as women (just for a crucial game) and then after beating the tar out of the real girls from the other team, re-identifying as men to play in the mens league.
The outcome is ALWAYS determined by who counts the votes. And the Dems have a stranglehold on California. If you look at the voting map, you will see that the interior of the state is always completely red, Conservative. The coast should go it’s own route, i.e. they could become East California and West California. THAT would be representative of the people of the state.
I kind of like the idea of boys being able to legally invade the girls rooms in CA to give our trans-gender children real equality, an obvious constitutional and human right.
Maybe it will teach those CA lib women a lesson in biology.
Wait until it starts hitting female athletic scholarships.
As soon as men who want the money figure out the system every money hungry man not quite good enough for pro mens sports will be claiming to be a woman to get the scholarships and or professional spots in womens sports.
Who’s doing the “counting?”
This is why I am all FOR men invading the LPGA tournaments in droves. If sex isn’t to be used to “discriminate,” then all’s fair in love and war.
Whos doing the counting?
I doubt if this will qualify. There has already been some shenanigans. From the story on this at the Washington Times,
“Last week, a California state judge required the secretary of states office to accept some 5,000 signatures on the referendum from two counties. The state office had rejected the signatures, saying they were submitted too late, but the judge ruled that they were submitted in a timely manner.”
The offices of the two counties closed three hours early on the day the petitions were due so the people put them through the mail slot. The leftist SecState, Debra Bowen, refused to count the signatures so the proponents had to sue.
Wow! This isn’t going to end well, then. With foxes like this guarding the hen house.
Absolutely correct ... and they'll go forum-shopping until they find that judge. This has happened repeatedly in CA -- a voter's vote means nothing any more.
