Who’s doing the “counting?”


It’s the county clerks. Usually what happens is that the clerks in the leftist counties along the coast get the message and try to invalidate as many signatures as possible. Meantime, the clerks in the conservative interior counties do a fair job. So it’s hanging chads all over again.

I doubt if this will qualify. There has already been some shenanigans. From the story on this at the Washington Times,

“Last week, a California state judge required the secretary of state’s office to accept some 5,000 signatures on the referendum from two counties. The state office had rejected the signatures, saying they were submitted too late, but the judge ruled that they were submitted in a timely manner.”

The offices of the two counties closed three hours early on the day the petitions were due so the people put them through the mail slot. The leftist SecState, Debra Bowen, refused to count the signatures so the proponents had to sue.
