The United Nations said Wednesday that violence claimed the lives of 7,818 civilians in Iraq in 2013, the highest annual death toll in years.
Over eight months of escalated violence has sparked fears that the country may be returning to the widespread bloodshed of 2004-2007 that saw tens of thousands killed each year. Death tolls dipped following a U.S. troop surge and an alliance of Sunni militias with U.S. forces against al-Qaida, but soaring sectarian distrust appears to be allowing the extremist network to rebuild.

YOU DON’T SAY...AND THIS DURING HUSSEIN OBAMA TERM IN OFFICE..
...when a vacuum is created - Islam takes full advantage and mass murder is the answer! Look at their self-proclaimed messenger - he did the exact same thing to seize power!

Gosh, that’s a shame. Meanwhile, most of the US armed services fatalities in Afghanistan have occurred during the five years of the Obamanation regime. Thanks Olog-hai.
I realize the geopolitical implications of dividing that country along sectarian lines, but I still think it should happen. The Kurds would get their own country, the Shia could merge with Iran and the Sunnis could have a rump state or move elsewhere.
Having spent the better part of two years there, I’m trying really hard to work up some sympathy. Really.

...and failing miserably.
That would give Iran too much of an advantage. Not as much as they currently possess, but still sizable, and the legroom to expand either way.
Can every body say, “Thank you Obama”.
True, but it might also give impetus to change in Iran. I wouldn’t agree to giving Iran more territory. The “state” lines of Iraq were drawn without thought to tribal and religious loyalties and it might be better to separate the warring parties. Obviously, I’m not a geo-political maven, but simply thinking out loud.
