Pluto is about 12 times as far as Jupiter at closest approach, so since the distance is squared the force goes down by 144. Pluto is also 0.0022 the mass of the Earth, which is about 0.0000068 of the mass of Jupiter. This means that if the Earth exerts 29 million times as much force on you as Jupiter, then the Earth exerts a force which is 144/0.0000068 = 2.1 x 107 greater yet than Pluto does.

In other words, the effect of Pluto on gravity at the earth's surface is 1/(2.1 x 2.9 x 107 x 107) = 1/6 * 10-15. That's less than one part in a quadrillion. I doubt even the most sensitive torsion interferometers could even measure that effect.

I like how they put this. If you jump you will have .3 seconds hangtime not .2 seconds. Why not say if you step on a scale you will weigh 150 lbs instead of 200 lbs. Cause that would be too easily disprovable.

Here's a computer graphic of the upcoming alignment.

When I was in highschool.... I could jump and just barely touch the rim on a 10 foot basketball goal. I’m 6 foot tall with a 32 inch sleeve. Now when I jump I can only touch about 3 or 4 inches of the bottom of the net. I was really hoping this day was going to turn back that aging process.... :)

Gravity is proportional to Distance squared. If those two planets are much closer to earth than sun at that particular moment, it could have more effect than just their mass ratios.

I’ve seen that on the big bang theory I think... :)

Three seconds does sound like a long time to “hang” in the air.....

Since the world record is 0.5 seconds, I believe you are correct.

The earth pulls on you about 2.8 million times more than Jupiter does when it is closest to Earth.

Oops! That should be about 28 million.

if you jump in the air at 9:47AM local time on January 4th 2014, it should take you about 3 seconds to land back on your feet instead of the usual 0.2 seconds.
Ludicrous, or maybe quaaludicrous. Jupiter Effect flashback. Thanks kjam22.

What happens if everyone on earth jumps into the air at 9:47 a.m. local time on January 4, 2014? Zombie apocalypse?

And what's all this about planet Pluto? (I thought there wasn't a planet Pluto.)

Yes, but it's still essentially immeasurable.

2 things. If everyone on earth jumps in the air at the same time.... the earth turns a semi-turn faster at that moment. And two... the obammycare website works faster if everyone on earth is doing something else than hitting it.

Doh!

I mis-recalled my back-of the envelope calculation, which uses MG/R^2 X d/R as the force, where d is the distance on the earth from the earth’s center. Of course, there’s a tensor involved to give you the direction of the force, but we’re just concerned with the magnitude here.

Then we just use M = rho r^3, where rho and r are the density and diameter of the moon or planet exerting the tidal force, and we see we have rho G (r/R)^3 X d. So it’s the CUBE of the angular size, not the square. So make that 10^-23 instead of 10^-15.

... but the point remains the same.

Of course the tidal effect is the differential effect of another object’s gravitational pull on the earth and objects nearby. The earth and everything on it is in free fall in the object’s force field, and it is the difference between the force on points slightly displaced from each other that constitutes the tidal force field.
