Gov. Brown Pardons Mostly Target Drug Offenders

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown issued 127 pardons on Tuesday, the vast majority of them to people who had been convicted of drug dealing, cultivation or possession.

Typical of the handful of crimes that were not direct drug offenses is that committed by a Humboldt County woman, who was convicted in 1995 after she broke into a home to steal food so she could feed her children.

A statement from the governor’s office said all those granted pardons had completed their sentences and had been released from custody for more than a decade without committing additional crimes. The Democratic governor said he issues pardons to those who earn them by demonstrating “exemplary behavior” and living productive lives.

Good. He should pardon all nonviolent drug offenders. Tax offenders too.

He could only pardon state/local tax offenders, the convicts who thought they could get around the IRS with slick ‘you don’t have to pay federal taxes’ schemes, are above Jerry’s pay grade.

Served their time and haven’t committed new crimes for over 10 years, I have no problem with these pardons.
Let’s see the same criteria applied to every pardon granted by Odumbo at the end of his reign.
Wait, can he grant a pardon from prison?

Drug offenses do not contribute to other crimes like rape, murder, robbery, right? Soon crime will become a disease that will extort money to programs for rehabilitation much like drug convictions. Removing the individual responsibilities of life.

Depends - if use is the only offense and not coupled with other crimes, I'm in total agreement. Even low-end "dealers" are OK.

Others might not be so deserving of the pardon. Here's hoping he had good case-by-case info and didn't put someone on the street that is a mugger/rapist/murderer that just hadn't "evolved" to that point yet.

Merry Christmas!

“Depends - if use is the only offense and not coupled with other crimes, I’m in total agreement.”

That’s why I qualified it with “nonviolent.” If they’re in prison for a drug offense and robbery, they can sit in prison and rot as far as I’m concerned. Mercy needs to be tempered with common sense.

This is an area where conservatives really should be pressing for mercy. There are far too many people who are convicted felons over nonviolent tax and drug charges. And for drugs, it’s usually offenses at a relatively young age.

Conservatives get a bad rap for being heartless and cruel. Pushing for clemency and pardons are a place where we should be taking the lead.
