Concerned by what he said is an approval process "fraught with problems and holes" for concealed carry permits, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said today he has asked the Illinois State Police to enter blanket objections for anyone with a domestic violence, gun possession or gang arrest in the past seven years.

Chicago has the toughest gun contol laws in the nation (excluding maybe DC) and has one of the highest violent crime rates.

Detroit by comparison, has a fraction of the gun control laws Chicago has, but also has an insanely high violent crime rate.

Guess what the commonon demominator is? They both have a bumper crop of criminals.

I guess I must be really dumb compared to the Sheriff.

“...Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said today he has asked the Illinois State Police to enter blanket objections for anyone with a domestic violence, gun possession or gang arrest in the past seven years...Dart said under state law the threshold for denying the permit is if an applicant has five arrests in seven years or three arrests for gang offenses...”

The last time I looked at ATF Form 4473, it had a few questions that might be relevant to this discussion.

11b....are you under indictment
11c....have you ever been convicted
11d....are you a fugitive from justice
11e....are you an unlawful user or addicted to

11h....are you subject to a restraining order
11i....have you ever been convicted of in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence

So Sheriff Dart, just how can someone who has been arrested for domestic violence, gun possession or gang activity legally get their hands on a handgun?

Oh, of course, if they have been acquitted!

So obviously, your concern Sheriff is with people who have been arrested, tried and found not guilty (remember question 11b). I mean the “gun control gold standard” is that every firearm transaction needs to use ATF Form 4473, as that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and stop gun violence!

There could be no other explanation, unless you don't believe that universal background checks will stop gun violence.

(/sarcasm)

Okay. At this point, the courts should just tell Illinois something like this:

“Justice delayed is justice denied. Illinois has continously ignored or postponed the rulings of this court on this matter. Violating the law in the process.

As of this moment, constitutional carrying of a firearm is legal. Prosecution of people utilizing this civil right shall result in an instant violation of law and a mandatory 20 year prison sentence, and a minimum $100,000 fine shall be imposed.”

Hey. A guy can dream.

Yeah, what’s up? Those folks would normally be rejected anywhere, as far as I know.

Is Cook County approving such people?

Yeah, you have it right...

Reminds me of the mobsters who would have 25 arrests, but no convictions...

Sheriff Tom Dart is a Girlie Boy and does not have COHUNES.

I debated him years ago on WLS “Political Shootout” with the late Tom Roeser.

The guy is a Political wanna be. He wants people to like him, thats all. He has NO sheriff expierence before his BUDDIES got him in to be sheriff.

I think he is being sued by Juicial Watch.

He was probably offered Higher office for doing this.

I don't know who Sheriff Dart is. But the article says that he wants to ban anyone with one arrest for domestic violence from getting a gun permit (I'm on board with distinguishing arrests from convictions), but the article says that the State Police must file an objecting for anyone with five arrests in seven years.

I don't have any arrests. None of my friends have any arrests. I don’t thing I've worked with anyone with more than one arrest for anything.

I'm not sure if the article means 5 arrests for domestic violence in 7 years, but it doesn't matter. I'd be worried if the government wasn't going to scrutinize gun permits for people who have been arrested four times in seven years for any reasons (every other year?).

If someone has been arrested that often and never convicted, does that mean they're doing something wrong, or that someone has it in for them? It's often not too difficult for a dishonest person to get someone else arrested under false pretenses.
