Former president Nelson Mandela was a member of the South African Communist Party’s (SACP’s) central executive committee at the time of his arrest in 1962, the SACP and the African National Congress (ANC) confirmed on Friday.

Even though it had always been denied, the ANC and the SACP confirmed that Mr. Mandela had served on the party’s central executive committee in their statements paying tribute to the anti-apartheid icon. There had been much debate about the issue among historians and academics.

SACP deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila on Thursday said he was a member of the party, but it was denied at the time for “political reasons”. …

Of course, he was a communist. Leftists always wear a mask.
I’ll give him this. When Mandela became President, he did not go “Full Mugabe”. He could turned that country into a bigger bloodbath than it is now.

South Africa back then was a first world nation with an ugly political reality. It had a world class educational system and first class military. Today, South Africa is doing its level best to become a third world nation again. I think a gradual transition from Apartheid would have been better, but that did not happen.

I don’t know why this was ever in doubt. It was well-known in South Africa that all the members of the ANC’s executive committee were also members of the SACP, as well as COSATU, the Council of South African Trade Unions.

He went stealth-Mugabe though. One term and out, handing over the evil work to his successors; and it wasn’t too long before the country assumed the ignominious title of “rape and murder capital of the world”.

I just had a thought. Since the FBI still has files about Martin Luther King, Jr. that are classified; perhaps, one day we will find out that he was full Communist Party member too.
Yes, I know he had advisers that were commies (some of the JFK white house tapes mention this fact), there is no evidence to prove that he, himself, was a communist. Just thinking about all the false praise going around these days.

“I’ll give him this. When Mandela became President, he did not go “Full Mugabe”. He could turned that country into a bigger bloodbath than it is now.”

I keep seeing this claim. What prevented him, and the ANC, from doing that before the election? They tried, but couldn’t.

After the election, even though he became president, he did not really control the military, still full of white generals and soldiers fiercely loyal to them, and even if he did control it, he did not have nearly enough trained soldiers to make use of the equipment. At its very peak, Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the ANC, had 15,000 men. The SA police force alone was 600,000, and the trained military in permanent and national guard type forces was another 800,000. Then there was about a million really pissed off Zulus, who would not have taken his side in a genocide exercise, and widespread solidarity against the ANC from some of the homelands too, like Ciskei and Bophutatswana, all with their own armies equipped by the SA government.

Now you can see the problems I have with this claim that Mandela could have massacred South African whites like animals had he wanted to. It may have been a bloodbath, but he and the ANC would have been utterly destroyed.

Of course, most of the generation that could have fought has left South Africa, the military is a complete mess, and whites are being murdered in comparatively large numbers.

So how did the ANC get so powerful if that was the case?

Not sure I understand your question. They won the election, thus have the political power, and the military abided by that as long as there was no craziness. As time went on, they gradually gained control of the military as generals and other senior officers retired or left, and their own people were trained and installed. I would say it took between 5 and 8 years.
