After a spate of news stories this summer citing tensions between President Barack Obama and his top military commanders over the possibility of U.S. intervention in Syria, White House chief of staff Denis McDonough hastened to assure the Washington Post that everything was, in fact, copacetic: The president appreciates candid military advice above all else, McDonough insisted, and has close, and in some instances warm, relationships with his military chiefs, as the Post put it.
During my own time at the Pentagon, where I worked as an Obama appointee from the spring of 2009 until mid-2011, few seemed to hold this view. I recall asking one general, recently back from Afghanistan, if hed shared his experiences and insights with the president. Rolling his eyes, he told me grimly that the White House preferred the military to be seen but not heard.

Obama has no liking for anyone who shows the least opposition to him or his positions and will do everything he can to remove them.
After all he is the Messiah.

A stutter post and I still forgot to ping him. *sigh*
He should worry about the colonels.
“The president appreciates candid military advice above all else,
Did Joseph Goebbels write this?
I just feel all warm and fuzzy knowing the CiC has a close relationship with his generals etc. Stupid me. I was thinking he wanted to be rid of the ones who would not follow orders to shoot civilians when the time comes. I rest assured now that all is well and he is probably golfing and even having rose garden beer fests with the officers.
Excuse me from any further comments today. I am off to buy ocean front property in Arizona just as soon as I send a bank money order to a distant cousin who has had his passport and all of his money stolen in a foreign country.
Thanks for the ping. I don’t know why you would think that I’d poo poo it. It’s a pretty good article, but it doesn’t mention a single example of a purge victim unless you want to count McChrystal who did himself in.
Obama is a war with the military and LTG (retired) Dave Barno, mentioned in the article, is one of his henchment helping to dismantle our defense department. No doubt that’s going on, but what is happening is some diabolical purge, especially with the names that have been suggested as proof. Someone please tell me one general/flag officer who has been purge, and who once free to talk about it has given his side of the story. They are all quietly doing what they have been told to do. They may not like it, but they are doing it.
Agreed. The worship, by the American people, of egalitarianism has elevated into positions of authority the stupid who are also cursed with poor impulse control. We may have reached the point where we may need a military coup, which of course would be the formal end of the republic. So very sad.
Too many people think our admirals and generals are all like Schwarzkopf. They aren’t. And all most people know about Schwarzkopf was what they saw at the press conferences. Look at the Navy. They haven’t had a serious naval battle in 60 or 70 years. How do you get ahead in the Navy? Do they promote people based on their performance in combat? Nope. They are promoting people based on other criteria. The same with the Army. They haven’t seriously maneuvered Corps and Armies for decades. Except for a few weeks, the Army hasn’t really maneuvered Brigades and Divisions in the past several decades. So, how do you pick your admirals and generals?
“Old Dave sure turned his Division around and hit those krauts hard!”
“Dave’s Division had the lowest number of sexual harassment claims.”
You get more of what you reward and less of what you punish.
Probably getting advice from Putin.
