After last month’s shopping frenzy, Louisiana governor looks to strip food stamps from abusers

The Louisiana governor's office said Wednesday night that it would strip food stamp benefits from anyone who took advantage of an EBT card malfunction that in some cases caused an all-out shopping frenzy in some stores across the state, The Advocate reported.

It is unclear how many recipients stand in line to lose benefits for a year, but more than 12,000 received an insufficient funds notice when the EBT card system was corrected on Oct.12, the report said.

“A worker at a soup kitchen in Alexandria ... recalled feeling empathy when she saw the individuals, who otherwise could not afford it, stacking up on food.””

How much of it ended up on the street, being sold out of car trunks?

OH WAIT...
Is that racist?

Practically speaking, he would be better off to just write this off. Any punishment will just cost more money.

Instead, he could use this as a launching pad to make improvements in the system that would be better for both Louisiana agriculture and the food stamp recipients as a group.

Agriculture is a difficult enterprise, and having a lean crop may actually be more profitable than an overabundant crop. Excess crops have been hurting American farmers since the early part of the 20th Century, and ways to reduce the excess often do them a world of good economically.

So what the state could do is purchase the excess crops, as a “bonus distribution” to those on food stamps. Stuff they would get for free in addition to what they get with their food stamps.

When president Reagan dumped excess government cheese, for example, it was not only of huge benefit to the cheese industry, but it *saved* the federal government hundreds of millions of dollars in storage costs. And it didn’t affect the retail price of cheese one dime. Oh, and lots of poor people got free cheese. What’s not to like?

Louisiana produces a lot of rice, sorghum, soybeans, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, peaches, strawberries and melons. And remember, this only applies to *excess* crops.

And in the Louisiana has been trying for years to come up with recipes for nutria, perhaps it is time that food stamp recipients learn to appreciate nutria chili, nutria jambalaya, smoked nutria and sausage gumbo, stuffed nutria hindquarters, and nutria stew.

Since they might know the name nutria, various recipes could be called by its other names, Ragondin and Coypu. Same difference, fewer nutria.

That’s a given. First thing I thought when I read the headline.

Yeah, just watch Holder come after the State of Louisiana because enforcing EBT limits violates “Disparate Impact” rules.

This attitude that these looters are just taking what they deserve after years of deprivation now permeates our entire culture.

Apparently more than food was purchased, I think any cases involving other than food would have a good chance of showing the individual knew what they were doing was wrong (if the suggestion a TV was purchase is substantiated - no sympathy).

These people were not little children, no matter how irresponsible they may be regarding providing for themselves. They knew or should have known about how much was available - the abandoned carts show many were clearly taking advantage.

I was home sick the day the EBT cards were shut down. I spent a good portion of the day insulting them on Twitter. (oddly satisfying)

When I asked "Why, if they hated us so much, they didn't figure out a way to make their own way and not rely on the very people they hate"

I had several of them tell me I was going to buy their food and I owed it to them, deal with it.

Agreed.

Governments launder generosity and charity. If the taxpayers were funding the accounts directly, there would be no room for abuse.

Hope is for the church. Write them a letter saying you will not shop there anymore.

“Write them a letter saying you will not shop there anymore.”

HA! Very good point! They won’t know I have been boycotting them for decades due to: putting local small town businesses out of business; being stuffed with Made in China stuff despite their initial USA emphasis; etc. Meaning Wal-Mart of course.

As far as they will know, their caving in to the thieving mobs is the reason! ; )

“I had several of them tell me I was going to buy their food and I owed it to them, deal with it. “

If it’s any consolation you were probably also paying for whatever device they were using to tweet along with the internet service.

So get back to work!

In my mind the abusers are guilty of writing bad checks. Perhaps they are guilty of overdrawing their accounts.

The amount due plus overdraft charge and interest can and should be taken from future benefits.

There is a strong precedent for the action. The Secretary of the Treasury overdrew his line by borrowing more than the legal borrowing ceiling. The overdraft was remedied immediately by drawing $300 billion to cover within hours of the ceiling being raised.

Maybe Texans should get one-way bus tickets for these poor families to New York City, Atlanta, Florida or some where else.”

New York City just elected a mayor who promises to tax the rich to end inequality. Send those folks to NYC, where soon everyone will be equal to them.

I actually think it's a brilliant idea. Give them a free bus ticket and some money, provided they get on the bus. Tell them accepting the money makes them ineligible to ever get food stamps again in Texas (or whatever state is sending them.) Maybe make a coalition of states that go in together on this - where the people who take the "payoff" are not allowed back into any of the states in the coalition (well, they are allowed back in if they are going to work, but not allowed to ever accept any welfare again within those states.) Then cut off all acceptance of federal welfare funding in those states.

Send them to some liberal city like New York or San Franscico with a mayor who promises skittles and unicorns for everyone.

Of course they knew. They just don’t care. They’ll say, “Well, what we did may or may not have been wrong, but you can’t cut our benefits because our kids are hungry NOW.

Then, if state is dumb enough to keep the pressure on, look for Sharpton and Jackson, et al., to show up and start banging the racism drum.

Anyone can write this script.

It appears that these people will be made an example of.

I'm not holding my breath. Not falling for another politician saying he's going to stand up for what's right and two weeks later swears he never said such. And as someone else said, Louisianna can take back their Katrina trash that blew into Texas. I passed by some on the way to the store earlier and it just chaps my hide.

Welcoming Katrina folks to Texas was one of the first things that Perry did that pissed me off.

Yeah, but they can say their card was sold or stolen!

No consequences for fraud.
