The Louisiana governor's office said Wednesday night that it would strip food stamp benefits from anyone who took advantage of an EBT card malfunction that in some cases caused an all-out shopping frenzy in some stores across the state, The Advocate reported.

It is unclear how many recipients stand in line to lose benefits for a year, but more than 12,000 received an insufficient funds notice when the EBT card system was corrected on Oct.12, the report said.

Louisiana does not have the money to fund fraud.

It appears that these people will be made an example of.

Maybe when people receive initial food stamps, they should be told of the consequences.

This could have been easily viewed as felony fraud by those who stole the food.

Just getting benefits denied is not as bad as being thrown in jail for fraud/stealing

“Just getting benefits denied is not as bad as being thrown in jail for fraud/stealing.”

I hope the stores go after them with theft charges instead of writing it off.

>> to lose benefits for a year

Then what? They get benefits for years thereafter? Why?

From the report:

“A worker at a soup kitchen in Alexandria ... recalled feeling empathy when she saw the individuals, who otherwise could not afford it, stacking up on food.”

Pure evil.

“This could have been easily viewed as felony fraud by those who stole the food.”

IMHO, it would be very difficult to prove that charge in a courtroom.

If your Mom keeps the cookie jar on a top shelf and tells you to keep out of it, you know you’ll be punished if you put a chair on the counter top and climb up to raid the jar. However, if you find the jar conveniently located on a low table, with no one watching, and no prior warnings to keep away from it; you would probably be forgiven for assuming you could reach in and take a few cookies.

No guv, please give’m more food stamps or they’ll end up here in Texas.

You still have a bunch of your citizens who invaded TX during Katrina and still have not left.

There balance remains at zero until the deficit is made up.

That's how it's done.

Why did it take something like that to make the state take actions against those abusing the foodstamp program? Shouldn’t weeding out fraud and abuse by a priority from the very start?

Louisiana does not have the money to fund fraud.

Lack of funding is just a momentary speed-bump for profligate wasteful government.

Well I can tell you that here when someone is caught frauding tanf, food stamps, etc. if it is a smaller amount (not millions) they just hold a certain amount out of the frauded benefit every month until the amount is paid off. Kind of a payment system.
Their rationale is that you wouldn’t want the ‘CHILDREN’ to be without a place to live or food. Yes, I am dead serious.

I believe this article implies that the State of Louisiana had to pay the balance.

So the citizens of Louisiana are currently stuck with the bill.

Understood.

Maybe Texans should get one-way bus tickets for these poor families to New York City, Atlanta, Florida or some where else.

Same here in Arizona. Who just gets dropped off somewhere and stays? Especially, when that somewhere is 120 degrees in the summer?

In 1977 I watched news reports of the NYC Blackout where similar sentiments were uttered. “The looting is just letting long-deprived poor people get what they deserve” or somesuch.

This crap never changes.

Louisiana recently had to have a judge make someone who was Superintendent of a School System step down.

This was St. Landry Parish. The man (and his wife) - both African-Americans - had fraudulent grades made at Southern University (mostly African-American university).

Both the husband and wife were members of the school board.

The husband had to step down as head of the school board when the fraud was discovered.

But he still was a member of the school board until a judge forced him to step down.

This is a horrible example for young people -- especially African-Americans

New York City just elected a mayor who promises to tax the rich to end inequality. Send those folks to NYC, where soon everyone will be equal to them.

Won’t happen. People will start screaming about starving babies and they’ll fold.

Wait for it.

The worker at the soup kitchen derives her sense of self-righteousness from how she feels about the “needy”.
