TX Republicans want to replace Cornyn
publicpolicypolling.com ^ | 11/6/13

PPP's newest Texas poll finds that John Cornyn is in grave danger of losing a primary next year if a serious campaign is run against him. Cornyn's approval with Republican primary voters is only 46%, with 33% of voters disapproving of him. And 49% say they would like their candidate next year to be someone more conservative, compared to only 33% who say they support Cornyn.

Ted Cruz's star in Texas Republican politics is making Cornyn's life a lot harder. 62% of GOP voters say they have a higher opinion of Cruz than they do of Cornyn, and among voters describing themselves as 'very conservative' Cruz is seen more favorably by a 78/8 margin. If someone challenges Cornyn and is able to effectively present themselves as another Cruz they'll have a very good chance in a Republican primary.

The good news for Cornyn is that he starts out with leads in head to head match ups with some of the names that have been bandied about the most as potential primary challengers. He leads David Barton (who announced he wasn't running this morning) 51/18 and Louie Gohmert 40/31 in hypothetical contests. Of course it's worth keeping in mind that's a function of name recognition to some extent, and in January of 2012 David Dewhurst had an 18 point lead over Ted Cruz.

We also just out of curiosity tested Rick Perry in a primary with Cornyn, and he would lead Cornyn 46/35. We find very little support for Perry for President in Texas or anywhere else for that matter, so if he wanted to continue on in elected office that might be his option for doing it.

Despite Cornyn's weak overall approval numbers- 30% think he's doing a good job to 42% who disapprove- he still has decent sized leads in hypothetical head to heads with two Democrats who are probably stronger than the party's eventual nominee will be anyway. Cornyn leads Julian Castro 49/35 and Bill White 44/39. The two Democrats would be more competitive if Gohmert was the Republican standard bearer- he leads Castro 44/35 and White just 40/39. But basically the conclusion there is that even if 1) Democrats got their best candidate possible and 2) Cornyn got taken out in the primary by someone voters saw as an extremist, it's still not a certainty Democrats would be able to make the race competitive.

It looks like all the intrigue in this race next year is going to come from the primary.

Conservatives cannot let pass a golden opportunity like this. Who will be the Tea Party candidate to knock out RINO Cornyn?

Why not DeLay? He was falsely charged by a RAT Operative DA in Austin. Tell me that wasn’t total bullshit?

Cornyn is completely worthless and requires defeat in the Primary Race.

Dwayne Stovall is running against Cornyn. I don’t like him all that much, but he is way better then Cornyn. So unless someone else steps up here pretty quick we will likely be stuck with Cornyn again.

Yep, nobody asked me, but I would like to replace Cornyn with someone less arrogant.

Yes, yes and yes.

Cornyn, being GOP leadership, is part of the problem.

He is the senior senator of Texas but is scared to death of the junior senator here.

We need a replacement.

Here’s some Perry support right here! Perry would be 100 times a better president than Romney... 1000 times bettart than New Jersy Krispy... 1,000,000 times better than Hillary... and 1,000,000,000,000,000 better than the blue-lipped Kenyan. Too bad he’s such a crappy *candidate* for president, though.

But not to hijack the thread... damn right Cornyn needs to be primaried. As long as it’s by a genuine Christian conservative.

Good news.

Replace Cornyn with a consistent conservative.

Let Cornyn move to a blue state and run for Senator there.

In Texas if there is a multiple candidate field how does that bode for the incumbent ...top two in a run-off?

If Cruz endorses a true conservative and campaigns with him or her... cornyn would get about 22% or less of the vote.

This is the strategy that worked well in getting Cruz elected. Dewhurst was not able to muster at least 50% of the votes so he was forced into a runoff and lost. So in that instance, the more the merrier and the vote was split among many candidates. OTOH I didn’t think we were ever going to get through elections during that time between all the primaries and run-offs and Holder lawsuits against our voting laws.

I'm from PA and I've joined ya'll by sending Lee Bright a couple of bucks.

Since we have no senate race in PA next year, Lee Bright will be the potential senator that I'm going to help.
