U.S. officials responded Sunday night to a report that the National Security Agency ended a program used to spy on German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders only after an internal Obama administration review started this summer exposed the operation.
An unnamed senior official told The Wall Street Journal that the White House "cut off some monitoring programs after learning of them, including the one tracking Ms. Merkel and some other world leaders. Other programs have been slated for termination but haven't been phased out completely yet."

In a perfect world we would never gather intelligence on our allies like this.
However, we have never lived in a perfect world when it comes to allies or intelligence, and never will.
The rest of the world is pissed, and I agree they should be, however if they had the capabilities that we have, the money and resources and raw ability like we have with our satellite dominance then how many would have done it too?
My guess is most, if not all, would have tapped into it if they had the opportunity we have. Their politicians can run around screaming foul until they’re blue in the face, but under it all and behind closed doors their own intelligence gathering specialists are green with envy.
There are only a few true allies in that business, like us and Canada, and even then we would freeze them out in a heartbeat if it was in our own self interests to do so.
President is about to introduce the new FBI Director. I am waiting for him to say I had no idea this man was my choice for FBI Director.
