Kwanzaa is a phony “African” holiday from December 26 to January 1. It was invented by a Black man, Ron Everett, who later changed his name to Maulana Karenga. Karenga was a major figure in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 to be the first pan-African holiday. Kwanzaa’s goal was to give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and allow Blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the Swahili first fruit celebration.
