As the Affordable Care Act goes into effect, Andy Pudzer, CEO of conjoined fast-food chains Carl's Jr and Hardee's, went on Fox News to tell Megyn Kelly that President Obama is flat-out "wrong" in thinking that health-care reform has no widespread effect on the job market, claiming that employers, himself included, are overwhelmingly choosing to hire part-time employees to avoid paying for benefits. It's baffling that companies continue to admit their preference for hiring more part-time employees, rather than paying for health care for those working 40 hours a week. Here, Pudzer helpfully spells out his house rules.
He tells Kelly:
It's very simple: If you increase the cost of something, businesses will use less of it. If you decrease the cost, they will use more of it. So if you increase the cost of full-time employment, there will be less full-time employees. If you decrease the cost of part-time employment, you'll have more part-time employment.
Never mind the company's arguably misguided (some say "disgusting") eight-year history of employing pseudo-sexy people like Paris Hilton in an age when competitors have increasingly abandoned $400,000-a-day celebrities in favor of low-cost viral approaches; it's just the president's fault. That's the story Carl's Jr. is sticking with, starting with an outpost in Texas that closed recently, hanging a sign in the window reading, simply, "Closed by Obamacare."
In before the Idiocracy references.
Intensive IRS audit and health department inspections in every last one of his restaurants commencing in 3.....2.....1.....
He is an occasional contributor to the Wall Street Journal Op-Ed pages. He had a recent article detailing why he won’t open a new restaurant in California, it was a long column.
The writer switched over to the ad hominem approach pretty darn quick.
yeah, because hiring sexy models to help sell your product was never done before Carl’s Jr. did it!
The CEO could find his buns in a sling...
(you mean like that?)
Which is it? PUZDER or PUDZER? It’s one way in the headline and the other in the article..................
The cost of full time labor has gone up for all employers, not just lower skilled jobs. Even DOD contractors with mostly engineers with masters degrees are paying more. The real hit in my area has been to a hospital that is always in the top ten. Vanderbilt has twice laid off even RN’s. There are less and less nurses on a ward now,so; those with in hospital heart attacks/complications from surgery, may well die. The CEO of the Cleveland Clinic flat out blamed Obamacare for his laying off qualified health care workers.
CA is pretty saturated with fast food workers, and their places of employment.
Don’t have What-a-Burger, but most others (Mickey-D, B-King, In-Out-Burger, Carls, Wendys, KFC, Church’s, Popeye’s, Pioneer, Arbys.
What we need is manufacturing jobs, but air pollution control boards and liability lawyers are shutting them down, or limiting their growth.
The Carls’ Jr here formerly in Hollywood was replaced by the Chick Fil A, but CJ’s have been closing left and right in L.A.
LOL! Yes, it's baffling what they have to do to stay in business.
As a kid I loved their hamburgers. They were truly char broiled. Now they paint on some sort of food dye to make it look like it's charred and then just fry them up like McDonald's hamburgers.
If you want a truly char broiled burger then go to The Habit. They're relatively inexpensive and popping up everywhere.
If I do go to Carl's it's for their Green Burrito Mexican food. Their ground beef is nasty, but the fish tacos are OK for the price.
Yeah, like Hardees is the only corporation out there that uses celebrity endorsements. And don’t get me started with the overpaid mannequins who use their star power to support 0bozo.
Indeed. But note also the basic subtext: “You hired Paris Hilton, THEREFORE everything you say about the affordable care act is incorrect.”
u accept jurnislists 2 b concistent?
The only thing baffling is that they admit it publicly instead of keeping silent and just doing it.
I fully expect the 'Rats to push for Obamacare coverage for part timers, to which employers will respond by getting rid of part-timers and full-timers and replacing them with mega-timers: employees who have to work 60+ hours per week to cut down on the employee count and the number of insurance policies needed.
..CJs have been closing left and right in L.A.”
Really? They just rebuilt one in Mission Viejo. Tore the old one down and built brand new on the same spot. Haven’t noticed any closing in the OC.
Great...Have him call Ted Cruz. We’ll get this thing stopped. Nevermind.
Only CRAZY PEOPLE and Evil Christian-types think Obamacare is costing jobs.
Didn’t you get the mainstream media memo about this?/s
