On Friday, it seemed that a proposal being spearheaded by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) could potentially be the key that would relieve the fiscal crisis stymieing the Capitol.
By Saturday, the plan fell flat on its face.
Senate Democratic leaders rejected the approach that had been drafted by the moderate from Maine although Collinss plan had attracted interest from several Democratic senators eager to strike a bipartisan deal. That left Collins who had been trying to play deal maker in recent days to save Congress from itself perplexed by the swift Democratic rebuff.
I have bent over backwards to try to listen and accommodate and modify my plan, Collins said. I tried to explain to [Democrats] some of the different realities that Im dealing with in my caucus, as well. Its a delicate balance to keep enough Republicans on board as well as attract Democratic support.
The frustration clearly boiled over on the Senate floor on the 12th day of the shutdown as Collins and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) engaged in a heated back-and-forth over the Democratic leaders rejection of Collinss plan, according to several sources who witnessed the exchange.

Well there is the problem right there.
It’s not Collins’ store to give away.....It’s McConnell’s.
Collins, in her own words, “bent over” - and now she’s surprised at what was done to her?
Rube.
The Dems aren’t worried. They know their media lapdogs will blame the GOP anyway, even though they may have to poll 100% Democrats and no Republicans.
They don’t want a deal Collins, wake up.
So she decided to speak for others and the veneer of civility devolved into a catfight with another airhead-did she really expect anything else?
Collins has demontsrated what is known as “malicious stupidity”.
She really thought she could “strike a deal” with the scumbag rats? Yikes.
/eyeroll
I have bent over...”
Really big mistake around Progressives and RINOs ....
drivel......
she was just pandering to the lamestream media
Collins may be a "RINO", but whatever you think of her "plan", she sure showed us exactly how "compromising" the Progressive Democrats are, which is to say, not at all. Headline, please!! "New Party of No"!!
THEIR plans are far worse than Collins's, and they will surely bully their way through if they keep their slim Senate majority. 0bama will not be impeached or removed in the next three years, I think you can count on that? so the only way to block his/their agenda is through the ballot box. No help will be coming from the best candidate who fails to win election, just saying...
Collins is under the mistaken impression that Reid and Obama care about the realities of her caucus.
What will it take for Collins and McConnell to see that Reid and Obama want nothing short of total annihilation of Collins and her caucus?
What will it take for Collins and McConnell to see that Obama has changed the game, and that the old rules of compromise are no longer in play?
It's now total submission or nothing. That's the new Democrat party.

Really... Boehner needs to call a press conference and distribute a copy for every repoter in the crowd...a copy of each proposal the house has passed. Distribute those and tell them the Senate will need to pass one of these, and the president will need to sign one of them. End of story. They’ve made a number of offers. I wouldn’t make any more and I wouldn’t listen to any counter offers at this point.
“as Collins and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) engaged in a heated back-and-forth”
Wow! That must have been an edge of your seat, nail-biter, thriller...
Or not.
“total submission or nothing”
Supposedly Harry Reid has threatened to use “the nuclear option” to pass his debt limt bill through the Senate.
Boehner would then have to get it voted down in the House while the media is praising Harry’s resourcefulness.
AND get his most conservative members to agree to a short term debt limit hike to stop media caterwauling about ‘default’.
Then the CR/Obamacare fight could continue until the WIC mothers, disbled vets etc knock down Harry’s barricade of the minibills in the Senate.
I think Boehner could do it. Harry just might give him the means.
The nuclear option means shutting down minority filibuster/cloture powers against Senate rules.
Going nuclear in the Senate means that the rules are that there are no rules. Reid will use parlaimentary tricks whenever it suits his purposes, even though he went on record decrying it when Republicans talked about it over Democrat judicial nomination fights during the Bush term.
The only rule that should matter to Republicans is that Democrats are not good-faith actors.

Lets start that conversation by acknowledging we arent going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants... bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society. Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors. [but hes not in favor of amnesty, snicker, definition of is is]
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.

Surrender in my book, don’t know how reliable this NRO guy is.
Bending over backwards isn't what was needed. What was needed was total capitulation.
