The government benefit cards that allow people on public assistance to buy food went down Saturday, impacting welfare recipients in Los Angeles and other cities across the country.
Distressed shoppers began calling and emailing the KTLA 5 newsroom Saturday morning to report the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system wasn’t working.
A Food 4 Less store in Hollywood confirmed that the EBT system went down at about 7 a.m.
A Stater Bros. Market in Downey also said the system was not working. The California and federal government EBT websites remained out of service as of Saturday afternoon.

The down time may have started a little earlier.
Yesterday, we were buying a few groceries in the afternoon in wino country.
The gal in front of us had bought some food items and the total was a little over $20. Her EBT card was rejected.
She had two tens and nothing more. I gave her a $ to move the line through and not to have the situation, embarrass her kids. I told her to keep the change and divide it with her two kids.
How many 911 calls were made for this terrible tragedy?
The thing is there are good down on their luck people who need some help. Those are the ones I feel for. The takers are stealing not just from the makers but from the truly needy.

They should be pi$$ed at 0bama for not getting their welfare when they want it, but somehow I think Barry will find a way to make it Bush’s fault.

Too darn bad. Every single time I’ve been behind an EBT card user in a grocery line, they’re buying junk food, expensive cuts of meat, exotic expensive fruits, and many other items those of us who actually pay for our own food wouldn’t buy. They are not dressed in rags, nor are they driving a junker. How the heck are they eligible for EBT anyway?
