My Failed Attempt to Create An Obamacare Account: Can Site Really Be This Stupid?
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 10/10/2013 5:37:27 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Just for fun, I tried to create an Obamacare account at Healthcare.gov this morning. At 6:48 AM CDT, I had no trouble getting in. Things were going swimmingly . . . until it came time to choose security questions and provide answers.

As you'll see from the screengrab, I was informed that my account could not be created because "two or more answers to the security questions cannot be the same. You must provide distinct answers to the chosen security questions." President Obama, Kathleen Sebelius, or anybody else out there, please tell me, which of the following words are the same?: "Bulgarian," "Sunbeam" and "Vladivostok." Because those are, as you'll see from the screencap after the jump, the three answers I gave. Note: the first time I tried, I supplied real answers, but for purposes of this blog, when I tried again I used fanciful ones. Didn't want the whole world to know that my favorite cuisine is actually Indian. Oops!]

More here.

Can you tell that “Bulgarian,” “Sunbeam,” and “Vladivostok” are different words? Congratulations: you’re smarter than the Obamacare website! Ping to Today show list.

I don’t think this is an ‘overload’ problem, nor do I think it is a common programming problem by a totally incompetent S/W developer.

My intuition tells me what is there now on these servers is a S/W result from ever-changing and also needless filters on all primary inputs. As an example, the government is probably trying to filter user inputs against multiple data bases for any and all inputs. This is the mark of a paranoia infesting the entire government. So a simple question like where you were born, or who your niece is in a security question might be checked against every government data base there is. Depending on how those turn out from multiple sources, it is easy to see how a fault could occur.

Exactly. Anyway who needs the website when all the “helpful” navigators (Organizing for America members maybe?) are available to sign us all up?

*So yes, by all means, let's entrust control of 1/6th of the American economy to an Obama administration that can't tell that “Bulgarian,” “Sunbeam” and “Vladivostok” are distinct words!*

By all means, let's entrust control of 1/6th of the American economy to an Obama administration that can't tell that charging people triple premiums and having astronomical deductions we are not saving $2500 and year.

MR PRESIDENT:

WHEN HEALTHCARE COSTS MORE, WE ARE NOT SAVING MONEY.

Making people buy something at the point of a gun is extortion.

The author has to seriously rethink his own intelligence. Why would anyone sign in to a system that they know is flawed, every hacker in the world wants to have a go of it, and asks you to trust them with the highest degree of personal, medical and financial information?

“Can Site Really Be This Stupid?”

Wrong question.

Right question: Will it ever be anything BUT this stupid.

Short answer: No.

Eventually, Guns, Religion, Redskins worked for me. Then the created user id and password did not... nor did the send my password link. From someone who has designed and built web sites, this one smacks of intentionally creating frustration to drive people to use the conveniently placed phone number instead.

IMHO, it sound like the websites were not tested out. Basic issues like logins and password protections are simple and no software company would let there pants be down that much.

No, I believe it simply was not tested. They were probably running around like chickens with their heads cut off desperately trying to meet the established deadline while being told to change significant parameters. This how major software SNAFUs like this happen.

Obamacare is much like it's website. Not well thought out and being changed on the fly. It's a identity thefts dream besides the security questions.

Not only that but has anyone asked what is going to be the impact of Obamacare's 29 1/2 work week, the impact of limiting small businesses to 49 workers and millions of Americans either loosing there low cost health insurance or not being able to afford Obamacare?

I doubt it.

Obamacare is a SNAFU much like is being seen on the Internet.

I had the same problem, then tried it again without caps and it worked. Apparently, the system doesn’t accept caps.

They have no transactional traffic stability. It’s almost like they’ve got some script running in the background to parse inputs and dump them into a flat file. This wouldn’t happen with a robust database backend.

I’ve worked for a multinational corporation with websites garnering over 1M hits a day, and this never happened. For the money the government spent, they should have multiple websites running geographically distributed and load balanced web front ends feeding a central database. That’s very obviously not the case.
