Priest: Obama Admin. Denied Mass to Catholics (church doors locked)

How about trying this one on for size? Here is the press release headline from Congressman Tim Huelskamp’s office this afternoon:

Obama Administration Denies Mass to Catholics

Apparently, a priest was denied access to a military chapel this weekend. Father Ray Leonard serves at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia but because of the government shutdown, he wasn’t allowed to go to celebrate Mass this past weekend.

He is contracted by the Defense Department to meet the spiritual needs of Catholics, but not now. The chapel doors were locked and the sign said, “Shutdown: No Catholic service till further notice.”

Father Leonard said the following:

“This is our church, Catholics have an expectation and obligation to attend Mass and we were told, ‘No you can’t go to church this week…“ My parishioners were upset. They were angry and dismayed. They couldn’t believe that in America they’d be denied access to Mass by the government.”

All these shutdowns effect masses of “whitey”. When will someone notice...

True - we're the target but they also hit blacks and Hispanics who joined the middle class by their own efforts - and veterans of all colors... .

the military has its own diocese. The Archbishop of Military services presides. Last weekend, he made this statement:
“In very practical terms it means Sunday Mass won’t be offered,” Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services told me. “If someone has a baptism scheduled, it won’t be celebrated.”

Thank you for this information.

Thanks and I agree this is pure petulance on the part of our president.

You’re right of course, legally, technically, Obummer has the “right” to do this, and the military chaplains can’t complain. I’m still grateful however that they are shouting about this loudly enough to be heard.

Because while this isn’t an infringement yet on our First Amendment rights, it’s inching closer. And each such incremental motion must be noticed and resisted.

I completely agree.

I did not cite that properly.

It was from an article as follows

FoxNews.com

““In very practical terms it means Sunday Mass won’t be offered,” Archbishop Timothy Broglio ...”

I’d figure that some reason has to go into it. Yup, passing bullets might need to be allowed into the plan, though that’s not the first choice, dig.

After reading your post, I certainly understand your point. And I agree that if holding Mass in any venue, at any time, for any reason was permitted, it would indeed lead to greater disrespect, as you say.

However, I would think that in this case, the bishop responsible for these jurisdictions would recognize the affront to their freedom of religion, and take appropriate actions. Perhaps that's arranging for transportation of parishioners to attend Mass elsewhere, but in cases where that isn't possible, I would expect those bishops to be savvy enough to understand the ramifications of complying to the government's order.

I would also expect, as a Catholic, the Church to engage and fight when necessary. Turning the other cheek will only make us nameless martyrs, and will be seen as an act of cowardice and weakness by this administration.

Bishops’ attitudes vary all over the map. Some have grit, some are fluffy. The single most hierarchically structured Christian worship organization in the world scarcely uses the resource of said structure to the good. Christians are not always going to be guaranteed the catbird seat in the world. The bible warns clearly enough about that. Gutsy virtue is lacking and to get it, the Lord must be called upon to furnish it.

If you think the military and the retirees, veterans of foreign wars, wounded warriors and their families are going to just switch mass fro the chapel, three masses on sunday and a Saturday mass, accommodating thousands of people, who have given time, treasure and life and limb to protect our religious freedom on a Friday afternoon, just announce mass will be held at the local K of C hall, because the government won’t allow us to bring in a volunteer priest, keep the heat off and just unlock the door at no cost to it, then I think you’d better take another look.

These priests have been trying to tell us that the religious freedoms these people fight for is being given up by the moderates and taken by the progressives.

The moderates, go along get along are the ones pushing this.

Do you think this is a good thing or even an acceptable thing to so to these people and their families?

Where the only explanation is vindictiveness. It literally would not cast the government anything to allow mass.

Also... the cheek turning doesn’t mean to refrain from pushing God’s goodness into the world. Jesus came into the world, on what to the world is a very weird sounding mission! Jesus came to bless it even if it killed Him. Sinners do not ask too MUCH from God; they ask too LITTLE.

I am taken aback at the attitude that the military and their families are left to compensate with no appreciation, and are warning, fo r years that this is coming, from civilians or other military, that a little religious persecution and inconvenience is fine.

It is absolutely amazing to me.

The burden is on the government to explain to the military and it’s caretakers, the electorate, as to why the doors cannot be unlocked, private donations of services, hosts and wine, and a volunteer priest, are not allowed.

Do people think there’s nothing worth fighting for?

Or do they pretend, in their comfort, this will blow over, while condemning people who are trying to get it to blow over?

All you need is a Field Kit, Containing Crucifix, candles, small chalice, etc .... Note in the picture , the use of a standard GI issue blanket to cover the hood of the Jeep.Everything fits into a box the size of a shoebox. As far as as wafers for the Host, Normal bread can be used in a pinch.

It's a little bigger (taller, anyway) than a shoebox, but not by much.
{I used to be a Chaplain's Assistant, so I got to work with the field-kit.}

The couple of times I went to mass in the bush (Vietnam) I had a few words with the Chaplin, being a old alter boy I was interested in his “Portable Church” as he put it

Didn’t King John in England try this locked church thing a long time ago? Didn’t it stimulate churchmen and Barons to unite and force him to afix his seal on the Magna Carta in 1215? Wasn’t that the start of all human rights? It said no one is above the law—not even a king. Not a president even if Oprah likes him—even if he can speak well—even if he is a Liberal. Maybe we need a new Magna Carta that says no President is above the law.

I agree with you. We are being tested by this administration, as to how far we'll go. They're laying down fuel, and looking for a spark. If anything in the government is open, then everything should be open. This selective pain applied to certain groups is unprecedented, and unlawful. I believe that civil disobedience is in order, to take back our rights.

I’m not talking about civil disobedience.

I’m talking about people telling the priests to fight, where they have no role in fighting.

The first mass was in a house. The apostles broke bread where ever.
This is an unfortunate event. But perhaps this priest needs to access his direct line with God. In fact, all of us need to keep oil in our lamps at this time. These are crazy days.

Which verse in the Bible dictates where Christian mass should be held?
