Obama demands quick House vote on shutdown

On the seventh day of the shutdown, President Obama called on House Republican leaders Monday to allow a vote immediately on a short-term measure to reopen government operations.

Mr. Obama said he strongly suspects “there are enough votes” in the House to reopen the government today.

“The truth of the matter is, there are enough Republican and Democratic votes in the House of Representatives right now to end this shutdown immediately with no partisan strings attached,” Mr. Obama said during a surprise visit to FEMA headquarters in the district. “The House should hold that vote today.”

The president said he is “happy” to talk to Republicans about budget issues, but not under threat of a shutdown or a government default.

“We’re not going to establish that pattern,” Mr. Obama said, urging the GOP to “move beyond this manufactured crisis.”

Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, has said there are not enough votes in the House to pass a “clean” resolution to reopen the government temporarily. He said Democrats must accept changes to Obamacare before Republicans will agree to a budget deal.

“Providing fairness to the American people, under Obamacare, is all we’re asking for,” he said.

Mr. Obama dared Mr. Boehner to hold a vote.

Unbelievable gall to say that the representatives elected by the people of this country must do as he commands.

When he says things like "The truth of the matter" there is no one in this country that suspects he can actually be telling the truth.

Just too many lies.

Stand tough, Boehner. The citizens are behind you.

All he has to do is ask Senate Majority leader Chester the Molester to hold votes on the bills the House is sending over.

He is pushing for an ‘open rebellion’ in the House.

Mr. Obama dared Mr. Boehner to hold a vote.

The double-dare is coming tomorrow.

Well I’ll bet that there are almost certainly enough votes in the Senate to repeal the medical device tax, and possibly even to postpone the individual mandate by a year. This game goes both ways.

Boehner better hold firm and get his feet planted. The president can’t demand that the House do anything. If the House caves into demands they have become less than nothing. This is a Constitutional principle and it must stand.

obastard needs to be taken to the woodshed... with extreme prejudice.

Boehner better become a great communicator and speak to the people in very clear, CALM, measured, truthful terms... better yet, find someone who can because this is not Boehner’s forte. Ted Cruz might be a good choice but someone from the House is more appropriate so as not to play into the dems hands and claims that Boehner is Cruz’s puppet.

Exactly. There is a bevy of bills sitting in the Senate funding key aspects of the government.

If I were Boehner I’d toss that potato back at Harry Reid.

To quote Khan, “You are in a position to demand nothing, sir. I, on the other hand, am in a position to grant... nothing.”

Take the vote and shove it to him.

Actually the Dems have a plan to force clean CR resolution that he is asking for. That vote will take place and will fail to pass.

The only reasonable response that Boehner and Congress collectively should make is: “Go to Hell, Obama.”

Well, if obamma were to ‘double-dog dare’ Boehner, then that would probably move Boehner to do something, but just an ordinary dare, that is nothing.
