Wisconsin issues concealed gun carry permit No. 200,000

Wisconsin has reached a concealed weapons permit milestone.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced Tuesday that permit number 200,000 was printed Monday at the Department of Justice’s secure processing center in downtown Madison.

Wisconsin became the 49th state to license people to carry concealed weapons in 2011 with the passage of Act 35. The law took effect Nov. 1 that year and Van Hollen announced extra staffing to handle the expected rush of applicants.

Van Hollen said the DOJ continues to receive 500 to 1,000 applications a week. “The dedicated staff is able to process the majority of these applications in less than a week,” he said in a news release.

The announcement also noted that since the adoption of the permanent rules for administering Act 35, the cost of an application has fallen from $50 to $40.

More than 5,800 applications have been denied. One person has appealed their denial in circuit court, a man who was turned down over a 2002 misdemeanor conviction for disorderly conduct related to a domestic dispute. A federal law known as the Lautenberg amendment bans firearm possession by anyone convicted of domestic violence.

It’d be much more efficient to simply issue one permit for the entire population of the state, in perpetuity.

It would be interesting to see the violent crime statistics for Wisconsin before and after the law went into effect.

I agree. Here in Minnesota, we’ve been handing them out since ‘03 and we have only issued 153,288...

I live in WI. More often now I'm seeing tell-tale signs of concealed pistols in public. (New carriers are not great at choosing entirely concealable guns or wearing them discreetly.) And ... I love it. I'm surrounded by good people in my community, by and large. It bothers me not at all that they are armed. "Don't start nuttin', won't be nuttin'".

Yes, I live in Wisconsin. It’s a regular shooting gallery. I don’t know how long I can stand it. People are being gunned down left and right. Even the old grannies are getting in on the action. I might be lying about the grannies. With a homicide rate of one or two out of 100 thousand, it’s just terrible around these parts. (snicker)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m for concealed carry. I carry as well. But is this a defacto registration?

“Here in Minnesota, we’ve been handing them out since ‘03 and we have only issued 153,288...”

Hmmmm...maybe Wisconsin’s proximity to Chicago has something to do with the rapid rate in rise of CCWs.

IMHO, 2A is 2A, i.e., other than those in prison, heads of household restricting members of their household, etc., there should be nothing infringing anyone’s right to keep and bear arms.

Arizona has a solution for this.

“Permits? We don’ need no steenking permits!”

Violent crime is now limited to those who “aren’t from around here”, usually transients, and people who are so totally crazy they don’t care if other people are shooting at them, which they likely are.

Even Arizona’s crazy people are less crazy, because the survival instinct is one of the last bits of sanity to go. They try as hard as they can to keep the crazy under control, knowing that it could get them shot.

Anyone dumb enough to draw down on an Arizona cop deserves getting air-conditioned. And they are brandishing their guns less and less, as it is seen as a social faux pas in polite society. You do *not* brandish your gun at people who are armed without a very, very good reason.

An armed society isn’t just a polite society, it is downright Emily Post genteel. Young kids addressing adults as “Sir” and “Ma’am”, gentlemen tipping their hats to ladies, etc.

Wisconsin will be the wild west any minute.

Nobody has holsters either, they just bought the guns and are carrying them around
in their HANDS at Malls and swimming pools.
