At a home-school community meeting deep in the woods of Baden-Württemberg, children kick around balls and parents grill sausages while chatting about their latest run-ins with the state.
An American woman who just gives her name as Teri says she and her German husband started home-schooling their two daughters so they could learn both English and German. We want them to be fluent in both languages, in both cultures and in both politics, she says.
But when local authorities discovered their daughters were not going to school, Teri and her husband received a letter demanding they enroll them. The letter said we can fine you tens of thousands of euros. We can take your children away from you. We have the power to do this, and we have the power to do that, Teri says. It was very frightening.

The power of the gun
Deutschland,Deutschland uber Alles, government over the family over the rights of parents, hell sounds just like the Demoncrat plan for America
Teri should move here to North Dakota or another red state
One thing American leftists are super reluctant to admit -
everything they want to do requires a gun be pointed at someone’s head.
Well, I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.
That’s why they were in love with Hitler. Apparently, there’s some latent Nazism waiting to express itself in the current German government.
Power is such a corrupting influence it matters not the country, race, culture but it is universally corrupting and that is exactly why the Founders of the USA wanted a limited government and we have been too stupid, too lazy, for too long and now we are the mercy of the ruling elite.
What remains of the 2nd Amendment is not sufficient to stop the power hungry ruling elite and they know it.
Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer.
The laws they are using against homeschooling families date to the 1930s. All authoritarian statists know that control of education is absolutely critical.
“We have the power to take your kids away”
Yeah, my grandparents knew all about that. At least they snuck them out before they were murdered.
It’s a very paternalistic society. I don’t know about the generation that is in their early 20s right now. But 20 years ago, though they were very very filled with guilt about their grandparents’ generation, the young people were still very divided between bully and weakling, most people with intense social fears and slavish followers. Fathers are still people of great power and engendering fear and obedience. It’s changed somewhat but it’s slow. While I love my German friends, you can still see the paternalistic, follower-ish characteristic of the culture.
The power of the gun
The power of the government only gun!
There I fixed it for you!
Germans never seem to be able to completely kick the Nazi habit do they! “ YOU VILL EAT ZEE SAUSAGES UND YOU VILL LIKE ZEM!”
“Teri should move here to North Dakota or another red state”
Fathers are supposed to be head of the family, but not abusing their power.
Um, let’s cut Germany a little slack on this. You remember that Hitler guy, right. I think the Germans have a right to be a little sensitive about what sort of ideas might get crammed into a kid’s head after that Hitlerjugen camp out. I’m not condoning the attack on home schooling, just saying that there’s a pretty damned good reason why there are laws on the books in Germany about keeping nazism there throttled back to zero, which includes making sure that Germany’s children know and understand what was done by their great grandparents.
That is a very confused response. What exactly do you want the government of Germany to have slack cut for them over, if not this issue? This is a statist position in and of itself; there is no excuse.
Also, do yourself a favor and learn some history.
