SUSPENDED: Michigan State removes liberal professor who went on anti-Republican tirade

Shocked? I sure am. I thought they’d just give him a quiet slap on the hand or ignore him altogether. I never expected he’d receive real consequences for leftist tirade:

CAMPUS REFORM – Michigan State administrators have suspended Prof. William Penn for the remainder of the semester, after he was caught on video going on an anti-Republican tirade on the very first day of his literature class.

In an email to students Thursday morning, Dean Karen Wurst of the College of Arts & Letters, cited his “inappropriate, disrespectful and offensive” comments.

“On Aug. 29, during your Literatures, Cultures, Identities course, Professor William Penn made comments he has acknowledged were inappropriate, disrespectful and offensive and may have negatively affected the learning environment,” she wrote. “Once MSU was made aware of the situation the Office of the Provost immediately began a review.”

“As a result, Penn’s duties have been reassigned, and he will not be teaching this semester,” she added. “A new instructor is being assigned to your course.”

Kudos to Michigan State University for protecting the classroom from political intimidation.

Ward LeRoy Churchill (born October 2, 1947) is an American author and political activist. He was a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1990 to 2007. The primary focus of his work is on the historical treatment of political dissenters and Native Americans by the United States government. His work features controversial and provocative views, written in a direct, often confrontational style.[1]

In January 2005, Churchill’s work attracted publicity because of the widespread circulation of a 2001 essay, “On the Justice of Roosting Chickens”. In the essay, he claimed that the September 11 attacks were a natural and unavoidable consequence of what he views as unlawful US policy, and he referred to the “technocratic corps” working in the World Trade Center as “little Eichmanns”.[2]

In March 2005 the University of Colorado began investigating allegations that Churchill had engaged in research misconduct; it reported in June 2006 that he had done so.[3] Churchill was fired on July 24, 2007,[4] leading to a claim by some scholars that he was fired because of the “Little Eichmanns” comment.[5] Churchill filed a lawsuit against the University of Colorado for unlawful termination of employment. In April 2009 a Denver jury found that Churchill was wrongly fired, awarding him $1 in damages.[6][7] In July 2009, a District Court judge vacated the monetary award and declined Churchill’s request to order his reinstatement, deciding the university has “quasi-judicial immunity”. In February 2010, Churchill appealed the judge’s decision.[8][9] In November 2010, the Colorado Court of Appeals upheld the lower-court’s ruling.[10] In September 10, 2012, the Colorado Supreme Court upheld the lower courts’ decisions in favor of the University of Colorado.[11] On April 1st, 2013, the United States Supreme Court declined to hear the case. [12]

...

In January 2005, during the controversy over his 9/11 remarks, Churchill resigned as chairman of the ethnic studies department at the University of Colorado — his term as chair was scheduled to expire in June of that year.[21] On May 16, 2006, the Investigative Committee of the Standing Committee on Research Misconduct at the University of Colorado concluded that Churchill had committed multiple counts of academic misconduct, specifically plagiarism, fabrication, and falsification.[3] On July 24, 2007, Churchill was fired for academic misconduct in an eight to one vote by the University of Colorado’s Board of Regents.[4]

What is he doing today?

He needed to go.

I heard the video, and one student who had the audacity to even look at him in a questioning manner was told by the professor that he would be watching him during the school year and would find out if he was a racist or not.

Yep. RE-assigned means he does even less work he would have done and still gets paid.

The thread was about a professor who overstepped his boundaries. I gave a personal example of a professor who overstepped his boundaries.

Students ought to be able to sue for financial fraud a la bait and switch. They pay for one subject, get suckered into another.

“The professor should be sent to one of those “tolerance” classes at Diversity University.”

OR he could be sent to a re-education gulag — The Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies.

True enough, but that MSU decided to take any sort of legal action whatsoever against this guy and did not just tell everyone to embrace him as a sort of heroic maverick is in and of itself a step in the right direction. Sad but true.

For all his rants about Republicans I noticed (on the Rate My Professor site linked on this thread) that a common complaint from students is that he is constantly trying to sell his book. I guess there are capitalists and then there are capitalists.

I listened to the video yesterday or whenever it was first posted. A lot of it was the usual leftist anti-Republican rhetoric you expect from a lot of college professors (not all of them), so I was surprised any action was taken. The most problematic item was when he threatened to come after any student whom he discovered to be a "closet racist" (of course he would be judge and jury of that), which could be taken as a threat to use violence against such students.

The student who recorded the rant was on O'Reilly Thursday evening.

I'm impressed too... and surprised. Most liberal elites don't 'get' that hate isn't a function of 'choice of victim' for the time...

Jim Crow haters in the South in the 50's didn't see themselves as 'haters' they saw themselves as people who were able to discern that some were MUCH less equal than others - and deserved to be treated badly. They chose blacks to dislike. Liberal elites have chosen white conservatives... Germans chose Jews. Each group felt OK because they knew some groups ( like conservatives) are unable to fight back... and since they were inferior anyhow...

So yeah, I'm totally surprised that a campus 'frowned upon' minority (conservatives) would be treated fairly.
