The singer Billy Ray Cyrus was supposed to be interviewed on television this week, but he canceled. And who could blame him? His daughter, Miley, embarrassed herself and her family on worldwide TV. Her narcissism on full display, the 20-year-old pop star simulated sexual activity with an older male singer while singing some kind of suggestive song. With millions of young people watching, the scene was as degrading as it was unnecessary.

As her father, Mr. Cyrus should be mortified by Miley's behavior. He's made no direct comment about it, but he should.

Generally speaking, there is an epidemic of bad parenting going on in America. The three teenage boys accused of murdering a young Australian man in Oklahoma were constantly in trouble, according to local authorities. After being apprehended, there were cries that they are "good kids." Bull. The overwhelming evidence is that they are thugs. A background check on their parents finds they are largely irresponsible and apathetic. One mother is even in prison.

In Spokane, Wash., two 16-year-old boys have been charged with beating a World War II veteran to death. The father of one of the accused killers told the press he doesn't understand how this could have happened. Then he admits he hadn't talked with the boy in weeks and that his grandmother essentially was raising him.

There is no question that American society is becoming increasingly callous and coarse, and part of the reason is that derelict moms and dads refuse to set boundaries for their children. Many parents are distracted and care more about themselves than their children, and the kids know it.

Some liberals want the government to replace bad parents by pouring billions of dollars into social programs that often wind up being babysitting services. This is a fool's errand. The government cannot overcome bad parenting. What our leaders can do is publicly condemn irresponsible parental behavior in vivid terms.

When was the last time you heard a powerful politician do that? The truth is, the powers that be are mostly afraid to mention the collapse of the traditional family, because secular-progressives attack any judgmental behavior on the part of a politician. According to the secular left, unless a public person is a saint, he or she has no right to cast aspersions on any parental situation.

Sociologists well understand that chaos at home causes violent behavior, educational failure and social alienation among children. Yet, many of us in America stay far, far away from this topic.

That in and of itself is a national scandal. Bad parenting is gravely harming this nation. Let's get that out in the open. And the campaign should begin with the president of the United States.

There is no doubt society is becoming increasingly callous and course.”

I don’t care for O’Reilly...but he is correct.

Very often I feel like I am not “grown up” enough to live in the world as it is today.

lbj and the democRAT crowd since the ‘60s has done a number on them, and they still vote overwhelmingly for those holding them down and complain it is not their fault. Einstein's they aren't.

The daddy did to make a comment, something about sticking with her, that she was still his daughter etc. I’m not sure of the exact quote but it ran something along those lines.

“As her father, Mr. Cyrus should be mortified by Miley’s behavior. He’s made no direct comment about it, but he should. “

Wrong! It’s at least 5, and probably nearly 10 years too late for him to dictate standards of behaviour for Miley. A 20 year old is a young adult — and adults have the right to make their own decisions; and to live with the consequences.

The father of a 20 year old still has a lot of influence — but, directiveness will simply flame rebellion. The best he can do is be there for her, when she realizes she needs him — something he’s already said he intends to do.

mr, o’reilly,
billy ray cyrus is a hypocrite who deserves neither sympathy nor empathy for what his daughter did. He gave up the right to either when he did a salacious photoshoot with her when she was still young enough to be taught right from wrong and he pushed her in exactly the direction she has gone.
He benefitted himself through her fame and now he can accept the blame for how she got there.

After a very quick read, though I am not a big fan of Bill O’Reilly, he bat this one out of the baseball park.

Look for more Christians from the global south to be heading towards America and the west to bring the good news of the Gospel of Jesus back.

Too much fame ,too much money, not enough intelligence to handle it.

Miley should look in the mirror at that ridiculous haircut and be able to see she is having a mental breakdown. He hair cutter should be shot. She is not talented, she is making it on left over fame from her Hannah Montana job. When that celebrity is gone she will have nothing.

Her performance, meant to be sexy was pitiful, she hasn’t got the body or the looks to carry it off, and she is about a graceful as a Hippopotamus.

She needs an older friend to listen to, but she won’t , I see dope in her future.

I think he referred to her as his 'baby girl' - that kind of creeped me out.

His 'baby girl', her sickening performance, and her mom in the audience giving baby Miley a Standing O.

I'll look for that quote.

And, I thought my parents and my friends' parents were weird!

They were kinda' like 'Leave it to Beaver' meets rock and roll!

Her mother is a silly woman who is jaded by her daughter’s fame and money. To even be in the audience for this display was criminal.

"Billy Ray was quoted as saying, "Of course I'll always be here for Miley. I can't wait to see her when she gets home. She's still my little girl, and I'm still her dad, regardless how this circus we call show business plays out. I love her unconditionally, and that will never change."

I'm presuming this is what he said after the VMA showcase. "Read more:

"She's still my little girl, and I'm still her dad"

He is living in the past - maybe by saying Miley is his "little girl" he doesn't have to deal with his own age.

When she was a "little girl" he was a younger , too.

Maybe he's going though middle-age angst.

He should have bought a red, convertible sports car instead of pimping out his daughter - who at 18 is not "little girl" anymore once the Cyrus' hit Hollywood.

He once told Glenn Beck that he wanted to be "friends" with his children. We kinda' know how that works out it doesn't.

Billy Ray and wife, Tish (I think is her name), are always separating and threatening each other with divorce. They reconcile and then state the whole separating and threatening jive.

Miley said she felt responsible for the state of her parent's divorce. At any rate, she has sided with her mom - the mom who gave her a Standing O after Miley's awful performance thankfully ended.

As for parents, Billy Ray is rumoured to be quite the ladies' man.

How's that working out for you, Billy Ray Cyrus?
