FOXBOROUGH -- This preseason has been an up and down ride for third-string quarterback Tim Tebow. He started with an iffy opening against the Eagles, finishing 4 of 12 passing for 55 yards and three sacks. He followed it up with an outing to forget against the Buccaneers (1 for 7, minus-1 yard, interception). And then he was forced to watch from the sideline as his team went through what was widely considered a dress rehearsal for the regular season against the Lions. On Thursday, he provided a bit more of a mixed performance against the Giants. While the starters sat, Tebow watched as Ryan Mallett directed the second-team offense in the first half before getting his opportunity in the second half. Right away fans got to see a bit of the good Tebow that won games for the Broncos in 2011, completing short, quick passes and burying his head behind blockers with runs up the middle. There was also the bad. He took four sacks, some of which were because of poor blocking. And he had trouble connecting with his receivers, under throwing a pass to Aaron Dobson that was picked off. But when people look back at this game, they'll see he came back and made some tremendous passes, including a 52-yard touchdown strike to Quentin Sims in the fourth quarter, that led the Patriots to a 28-20 win.

I’ll say one thing for Tebow... He can take a hit even with the scrubs blocking for him. Unlike Sanchez for example. Tebow is a strong QB that can last all season. That’s a good thing to have in a backup c
No real dog in the race, so keep him or cut him, it’s pretty much the same to me.
But let’s try to maintain some perspective here, the guys against which he threw those passes might not even have a spot on a team’s practice squad come the day of the season opener. The 4th q of the 4th preseason is all about the guys on the bubble.
My dad would have said that one is damning tebow with faint praise, touting his accomplishments in this game. That tebow is competitive against 3rd string and practice squad players isnt really much of a compliment.
But good for you, tim, you’ve kept your nfl buzz going for another few days at least.
IMO he proved his worth when he led the Broncos to the playoffs a couple years ago.
Tebow threw a lot of really bad passes as well last night. I hope Brady doesn’t get hurt.
I hope Brady doesnt get hurt.

Not wishing Brady a major injury, but a minor one that required about a 3-game sitdown might permit Tebow to play with the starting offense (blockers and receivers) and show what he can do. He has seldom played with starters; thus the sacks and interceptions.
The defense he faced were not starters either.
On the flip side, Brady generally gets a bit better protection. He's good, but a lot of his super success comes from superior protection that allows him to stand fast in the pocket and fully utilize his skills at finding and hitting his targets - that usually diminishes when protection breaks down and he can be made to look like any other scrambling QB with bad protection. While not a premium QB, Tebow adds some flexibility with his strength and willingness to take a beating during a run. He could probably be cultivated into a true asset.
I'd like to see Tebow stay as a player, if for no better reason that we need some true role models in professional sports. I guess that's why I wouldn't hack it as an owner/coach...
The Pats will probably keep him. They’ll make the money back in jersey sales alone. That and after Hernandez and Gronk a few good stories about a Pats player helping feed the homeless and visiting children in the hospital won’t hurt either.
The defense he faced were not starters either.....Neither was the supporting cast on his side of the ball.
Did anyone see this play? Was it a 5-yard pass, followed by a 47-yard run, or was it a 20-yard pass downfield?
including a 52-yard touchdown strike

Good question BUT it reminds me of G W Bush in a canoe with 2 others and it overturned. The others sunk like rocks and W rescued them and WALKED on water to shore to save all of them.
Following day NY SLIMES had the screaming headline:
“BUSH CAN’T SWIM”.
The same applies to the Patriots offensive line and to the receivers he was throwing to.
Preseason is preseason.
It was about a 30 yd pass a bit high and the defender fell down after the hit. Overall, he will probably be cut.
Pray for America to Wake Up
Tebow is not a starting NFL QB. But I still see him as a valuable change of pace player.
I’d like to see sets where Tebow and Brady are in the game at the same time. You could put them both in the backfield and sometimes run a wildcat with tebow and sometimes have tebow play tight end.
The defense would have one more thing to prepare for and would need to react quickly depending on whether tebow was qb or receiver. Also the end around to tebow with an option to pass is still on the table as it the fake end around to tebow with brady keeping the ball.
I think it would cause a real headache for the defense.

Exactly my point.
Scrubs playing against scrubs is not terribly informative.

Um, Tebow will not be the number 2 qb on the team, that will be Ryan Mallet. Even if he is retained, Brady and Mallet will both have to go down for Tebow to get a shot.
Yeah, that's what I've been advocating.
Think it could drive the defense crazy.
I've got very mixed emotions about the Patriots.
On one hand they're the team I really detest.(Oakland a close second) On the other I'd love to see Tebow do well.
All he does is win.
Assuming that the Pats go into the season with three quarterbacks then if Tebow’s not at third string who will be?
