Assad had stated repeatedly he would use chemical weapons if there were foreign intervention in Syria’s civil war. According to European and Israeli papers, US trained Syrian rebel troops crossed into Syria from Jordan a couple weeks ago. It was in the repelling of these troops that the gas was used.

Carney said today in WH presser that they basically knew that Syrian regime was responsible for WMD attack because they had maintained control of WMD stocks at all times...yet.....after Benghazi..out of the blue..Panetta said this:

“Today, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced that the US no longer had knowledge of the whereabouts of some Syrian chemical weapons, and admitted that those weapons may have been funneled to rebels or Iranian proxies. “There has been intelligence that there have been some moves that have taken place,” said Panetta. “Where exactly that’s taken place, we don’t know.”
