Skip to comments.80 House members: Shutdown better than ObamaCare
Posted on 08/23/2013 11:55:29 AM PDT by Jim Robinson
More than a third of House Republicans urged their leader Thursday to trigger a government shutdown rather than fund the implementation of the health care overhaul they call "ObamaCare."
A letter from 80 Republicans asked Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to resist any spending bills that would accommodate the new health care law, which is nearing a critical stage of signing up millions of Americans for health coverage.
Because it's virtually certain that President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate would reject such demands, leaders of both parties say the standoff likely would result in a partial shutdown of the federal government, similar to those that occurred in 1995 and 1996.
The letter is mixed news for Boehner and other GOP leaders who view a government shutdown as politically unwise.
With 80 of the House's 233 Republicans signing the letter, a solid majority of 153 has refrained from trying to limit Boehner's options. That presumably would allow the speaker to push a bipartisan bill that funds the health law and is supported by a "majority of the majority" of his fellow Republicans, which Boehner says is essential.
However, he would need more than 60 Democratic votes to pass such a bill. That would give Democrats a major voice in its details.
The federal 2013 fiscal year ends Sept. 30. New money must be appropriated by then to avoid a shutdown of countless government offices and agencies.

Boehner’s already shot them down. I saw a thread about it earlier this morning. Coward.
Boehner will flip his whig when he reads this.
take away the Obama’s travel money , LOL, OMG cards every night with Reggie
Keep up the pressure!
Shutdown or stop the monster (ObamaCare).
If they are countless, then we really have a problem.
“Because it’s virtually certain that President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate would reject such demands, leaders of both parties say the standoff likely would result in a partial shutdown of the federal government, similar to those that occurred in 1995 and 1996. “
Then THEY will have shut down the government.
Boehner and 2/3 of those worthless pieces of crap are ball-less wonders. They make me sick to my stomach. The ENTIRE Obama agenda is being mplemented with NO resistance fomr them.
Even on gun control they caved. Try to buy any ammo lately? The deal was - o.k. let them buy the guns but cut off their ammunition.
2/3 of the GOP leadership needs to be voted out of office, starting with Boehner - the archpriest of the Surrender Monkeys.
I wish the A$$hats would talk back a bit.
When the house passes a budget that does not include funding for Obamacare, it will be the democrats who shut down the government when they refuse to pass or even vote on it. Even if they do pass it so they won’t get pinned, the president will Veto and HE’LL be the one that shuts down government.
It is impossible for the HoR to “shut down” government.
Those 153 are the same guys who voted to repeal ObamaScare some 40 times? Kabuki theater.
Those opposed to a govt shutdown should TELL OBAMA TO SIGN THE BUDGET!!!
Congress passes a budget that defunds Obamacare!
Passing that budget doesnt result in a govt shutdown!
OBAMAS TANTRUM, AND REFUSAL TO SIGN THAT BUDGET RESULTS IN THE GOVT SHUTDOWN!
Either a poorly written story, or the Repubs in the House, all of them are idiots. obama and the dems int he Senate are the ones that would shut down the government to get what they want. If the Repubs are framing it as “we’ll send this up and shut down the government”, then they are morons.
The meme the Repubs should have is we are funding the government, except for obamacare.
Fully funding present levels with no cuts in obamacare... the boehner way... surrender.
The meme the Repubs should have is we are funding the government, except for obamacare. The problem we have here is that the GOP is in on this.
Republicans are idiots. They want the Obamacare battle to be on the debt ceiling and not the CR. That happens in December, they will be back on the cliff, Obama will toss the pubs a bone and cut more defense spending and Obamacare will stay in.
Then they will all take a great picture about how they negotiated and did something bi-partisan which the Conservatives wouldn’t do.
And with that we are all screwed.
Obama and Holder are publicly speaking about their plan of the week that are just more smokescreen distractions to divert attention away from the incompetent manner Obama has handled his day job.
The best indicator of a PHONY ADMINISTRATION is the number of its REAL SCANDALS.
Commie Tyrant Obamas current talking points are thus smokescreen distractions for the products of Obamas first 4 years in office:
* Refusal to close US Southern Border to Mexican illegal alien invaders
* No known un-forged records of Place of Birth
* No known un-forged records of University grades
* Benghazi Massacre
* Dereliction of Duty as CIC during Benghazi Massacre
* Cover up of Benghazi Massacre
* Destruction of Seal Team Six
* Cover up of Fast and Furious murder of US Border Agent by Exec. Order
* IRS-Obamacare Commune Death Grip on Wealth and Health
* NSA-Gestapo Death Grip on all citizens communications
* Use of Courts against News Media
* Use of Supreme Court to install Un-Constitutional Obamacare Tax
* Destruction of the US Coal Industry
* Refusal to permit XL Pipeline construction
* Trillion Dollar a year Federal Overspending
* Monthly violations of the US Constitution by Obama
* Use of Exec. Orders to bypass Congress.
REPLACE sniveling coward Speaker Boehner with a FIGHTER!
It is time to IMPEACH Tyrant B. Hussein Obama, aka Barry Soetoro.
Tyrant B. Hussein Obama, (aka Barry Soetoro), continues his unopposed efforts to expand Totalitarian Obamanation in Liberty-based America.
Where are the Republican opponents of Tyrant Obama?
Why have the Articles of Impeachment for Tyrant Obama not been issued by US House Speaker Boehner, or Pro-Welfare Republicans Cantor or Ryan?
Have House and Senate Pro-Welfare Republicans formed a cave-in pact with Pro-Welfare Democrats to protect Tyrant Obama?
The main thing that Speaker Boehner is afraid of is being blamed for doing his job.
Speaker Boehners job now is to shut down the NON-ESSENTIAL parts of the US Federal Government until Obamacare is ABOLISHED, however long that takes.
That’s about right. I figure that conservatives hold about 75-80 seats in the House and about 15 in the Senate.
Playing my broken record once again, I note that the gop wing of the uniparty is just as keen to see owebamacare implemented as the ‘rat wing. And it’s going into effect in a little over a month.
This is the GOP we’re talking about. They are as useless as balls on a priest.
Shut ‘er down now. or let debt shut ‘er down later.
We cannot keep going like this.
Better to let Obama shut down the government than have ObamaCare shutdown the nation. And it surely will if allowed to fester.
Our rep said there was a big conference call yesterday and the leadership wants to draw the line in the sand at the debt ceiling vote. Of course they will probably cave on that line also.
Well, that’s exactly what they said last year, and the year before, as pointed out in that Red State article I linked too above. It’s all just smoke and mirrors and they’re lying through their teeth.
Thats an excellent article.
It will indeed

Is there a list of these 80 House members who signed the letter? I can’t find it...
~ An Amendment to Establish Term Limits for Members of Congress
~ An Amendment to Restore the Senate (repeal of the 17th Amendment)
~ An Amendment to Establish Term Limits for Supreme Court Justices and Super-Majority Legislative Override
~ Two Amendments to Limit Federal Spending and Taxation
~ ~ An Amendment to Grant States Authority to Check Congress
Here’s a link to a local story about this that contains a copy of the letter with signatures. Unfortunately, none of those signatures is printed, so you’ll have to puzzle out the handwriting. Fortunately, my congressman, John Duncan, Jr. is one of the signers.
Those 2 pictures have disgusted me for a long long time.
Thank you, libstripper. My GOP congressman is NOT among the signers. Lynn Westmoreland does not dare raise his voice to Speaker Boehner.
Will FReepers keep posting "Glitch" threads every time that we have an occurrence of the FR display "Glitch"?
If so, I'm suggesting that they include the following Keyword: FFRR
FFRR - For FR display glitch threads [Articles] FR Keyword: ffrr
AND, a better idea might be to just "Bump!" one of the recent "Glitch" threads when we see the display problem. If people see these threads on the forum and are interested in what is going on, then they can just click on the "last" link, and read the latest info.
There are two threads on the "FFRR" list that have good generic titles:
Note: The "FFRR" keyword is intended for "display glitch" threads. Now you will see that I included three "current affairs" articles, and a couple of FR related threads near the bottom of the list. However, any new entries should be related to the FR display glitch.
- Oh well, No sweat... FR Jim "offers strategies" to dump Kommiecare in Congress!
80 House members: Shutdown better than ObamaCare (Aug 23, 2013)
- AND, - FWIW:
1. For FR display "Glitch" threads, use FR Keyword: FFRR = ffrr
2. Better yet, if the glitch returns, just "Bump!" one of the recent "Glitch" threads:
FR glitch returns - (Aug 7) - (Aug 30 - #90 full post)
