Tom Coburn calls for a national Constitutional Convention

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., explained to a town hall of his constituents that he wanted to call a national Constitutional Convention after reading Mark Levin’s new book, The Liberty Amendments.

“I used to have a great fear of constitutional conventions,” Coburn said according to the Tulsa World. “I have a great fear now of not having one.”

As the Tulsa World notes, a national convention is called by two-thirds of the state legislatures and is one of two ways the U.S. Constitution can be amended.

Coburn made his remarks in Muskogee, Okla.

Asking for a constitutional convention is like asking a pharmacist to open up the drug store and let you take some of every medicine he has because the prescription from your doctor, WHICH YOU NEVER BOTHERED TO TAKE, did not help your condition.

Why on Earth would anyone ever imagine that rewriting the costitution will solve the problem of an electorate which should not be allowed near a ballot and a government which does not even make a pretense of following the constitution we have? The constitution is not the problem, the FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE CONSTITUTION is the problem. That and the fact that only a tiny percentage of those who vote can quote anything from the constitution correctly. When voters have no idea what is even in the existing constitution and disagree with it when it is quoted to them it is insanity to suggest that rewriting it will help anything.

In short if Tom Coburn wants a constitutional convention he is out of his mind.

Uh-oh. I have mixed emotions about Texas. On the one hand, I love the independence of the people and their innate conservatism. On the other hand, I end up arguing a lot with the Odd Confederacy of Texas Seceshers. The damn fools are going to get themselves and a lot of other Texans killed. In case they haven’t noticed, the people with the bigger guns usually win. But say whatever you want, you just can’t get them to stop dreaming about the Glory of the Bloody Arm of Goliad.

Gandhi is one of the few politicians who got it more or less right. It isn’t enough to want to go your own way. You’ve got to convince the other side to be eager to be rid of you.

“it’s a bad idea all around”
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I once heard someone described as a “rotating SOB”, when I asked what that meant I was told that it refers to someone who is an SOB no matter which way you turn him and look at him.

A constitutional convention is a “rotating” bad idea or as you say “a bad idea all around”.

Get back to me when we’ve got representatives who will actually support and defend the Constitution we’ve already got.

No, most of us don’t affiliate with those groups. The more level-headed ones we tolerate because most of them have good intentions and a good heart. The more radical, Koresh-level nutcases are out there, too, but we try to ignore them. Anyone with a mindset of “Seceed-or-Die!” and/or “Let-Me-Go-Or-I’ll-Kill-You!” should be shipped off to D.C. along with the Austinites. ;-)

Now, don’t be mistaken, though. The Bloody Field of Goliad and the honor of the Texicans who were slaughtered there (and at the Alamo) is sacred. Don’t be mixing that up in the same paragraph as the Overzealous Nutwings or we’ll be here all day bickering about it. Sometimes Texans passing through Goliad who aren’t even Catholic will do a sign-of-the-Cross gesture and mutter a butchered version of the Hail Mary, just out of respect and reverence. Me, included. :-)

Of course you will.

Well?

BTW, you didn’t answer my question ... have you read the book?

No, I haven't.

The one making the initial claim has the burden of proof around here.
