Tom Coburn calls for a national Constitutional Convention
washingtonexaminer.com ^ | AUGUST 22, 2013 AT 1:20 PM | By CHARLIE SPIERING

Posted on 08/22/2013 1:05:12 PM PDT by Red Badger

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., explained to a town hall of his constituents that he wanted to call a national Constitutional Convention after reading Mark Levin’s new book, The Liberty Amendments.

“I used to have a great fear of constitutional conventions,” Coburn said according to the Tulsa World. “I have a great fear now of not having one.”

As the Tulsa World notes, a national convention is called by two-thirds of the state legislatures and is one of two ways the U.S. Constitution can be amended.

Coburn made his remarks in Muskogee, Okla.

“Add CO, NV and NM to the list (states with ‘rat control of the state legislature). And there’s even more if you go by states where Obama won the 2012 popular/electoral vote (add FL, IA, MI, NH, OH, PA, VA, and WI).”

Yup. The chances of getting anything ratified that we would want ratified is nil.

Buy his book, visit the library (good luck finding it), or borrow it from a friend.

The proper way to proceed is spelled out very clearly.

“I can assure you of 100% failure if you refuse to even try. You seem happy to put all your energy into talking others out of action.”

And in turn I can assure you of 99% chance of failure if this harebrained idea is attempted. I’ll spot you the 1 %.

I’m happy to put my energy into something that will pay dividends for my family or my country. This is the political equivalent of putting your life savings into enron stock. It isn’t going to have a payoff.

Would you like a positive suggestion? Good. I’ll give you one. Start a vegetable garden. It will do far more to bring positive change for this country than this silly scheme will accomplish. Plus you get exercise, fresh tomatoes and anything else you want to grow. Don’t want the produce? Give it to your local food bank or a family who needs help.

Here’s a bonus suggestion: keep bees. You get honey, free pollination services for your neighborhood (watch everybody’s garden go nuts), and a bonus dose of humility when hives die despite your best efforts. And bees will let you know when you’re being hasty. Oh will they let you know!

“Oh, reallly??? And, just who is it that tells Mr Levin what to do?”

Whoever signs his contract and pays him. Just like the rest of us.

“So what is your “doing something useful”?

Fair question. See post 167. And I practice what I preach. Actually I do a lot more than that, but that gives you an idea. Ultimately, the most important thing is to ensure that you and yours are still here. Focus on that and on God and you’ll come through OK.

“If it involves sitting on your ass and complaining, or pretending like you are going to be part of some army with guns, then you have nothing.”

I’m a hands on kinda guy. I detest the time spent doing nothing. As for Civil War, “glorious revolution”, ad nauseum, you can count me out on anything that is likely to result in piles of dead Americans. And I think the people who advocate that sort of thing are idiots at best.

Term limits, and constitutional acquiescence enforced by sheriffs or state DPS. Hard to ignore the constitution when you can be arrested and thrown in the can for it.

Thank you for your advice. I shall return the favor.

You are short-sighted. You should look at the possibilities from simply playing the game.

We need to see who comes down on what side; who says what and who doesn't ; who gaffes and risks their political viability; who forms "gangs" with whom to support, compromise, or foil.

None of this is possible if we take your advice and don't even try.

Mr. Levin is an author, and pretty much an independent contractor as far as his radio show is concerned.

If I trusted people to be logical nowadays, I’d be all for it.

However, I believe logical people are an endangered species nowadays.

And turn the tyrannical majority who elected Comrade Chairman loose to create a new constitution?

NO SALE.

The current constitution is not the problem - ENFORCING IT IS.

OH HELL NO......

Every nation that has plunged in to tyranny in the last 125 years, has done so AFTER a change in the Constitution.

The Liberty Amendments by Mark Levin

"[Mark Levin] has done an incredible job of drafting these proposed amendments aimed at re-establishing the balance between the federal and state governments...let our national conversation begin, and let us thank Mark Levin for initiating it." (David Limbaugh, New York Times bestselling author of The Great Destroyer)

"Mark Levin’s The Liberty Amendments is the revolutionary blueprint millions of Americans have been waiting for...carefully and powerfully written." (Jeffrey Lord, The American Spectator)

“Mark Levin's book is a serious work that can serve as an action plan for curing what ails us.” (Cal Thomas, The Washington Examiner)

Here are some of his chapter topics:

~ An Amendment to Establish Term Limits for Members of Congress

~ An Amendment to Restore the Senate (repeal of the 17th Amendment)

~ An Amendment to Establish Term Limits for Supreme Court Justices and Super-Majority Legislative Override

~ Two Amendments to Limit Federal Spending and Taxation ~ An Amendment to Limit the Federal Bureaucracy

~ An Amendment to Promote Free Enterprise (redefining the Commerce Clause)

~ An Amendment to Protect Private Property (curbing abuses under the Takings Clause).

~ An Amendment to Grant the States Authority to Directly Amend the Constitution

~ An Amendment to Grant States Authority to Check Congress

~ An Amendment to Protect the Vote (requiring photo ID)

While I don’t agree with every single proposal, most of them are wonderful and it’s a great place to start a dialog and a movement. We need to get organized and get busy. WE CAN TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK FROM THE STATISTS!
