Conservatives Split Over Continuing U.S. Military Aid to Egypt

As administration officials mull a response to the turmoil in Egypt, conservative foreign policy experts and commentators remain divided over the question of U.S. aid and how to deal with the military following its takeover and the recent bloodshed.

Those who favor continuing aid cite the need to protect key U.S. regional interests, topped by a secure Suez Canal and the Egypt-Israel peace treaty—interests more likely to be safeguarded by the Egyptian military than the Muslim Brotherhood administration it overthrew on July 3. …

Just the debate is sending the wrong message to the Middle East. If the US suspends aid, the gig is up in the Middle East, the US will have NO more influence again, unless the Russians and Iranians screw up.

Everyone will know that America does not back her friends and Russia does.

How can the US expect the Israelis to believe that (as he stated) OBAMA has “their back”?? What nonsense. How to conduct negotiations with the PLO at this time?

This is just the finishing touch. No one on the planet trusts us as it is. And they shouldn’t.

Obama wants his caliphate and the GOP are intent to let him do what he wilt as the whole of the law.

The best thing about this is that soon hands will be forcrd and we will HAVE to do our own energy. Thats when we can truly hope for change.

Any so called conservative in favor of cutting aid to Egypt is at this point playing into obama’s hand. Cutting aid to Egypt kills Camp David and forces middle eastern nations to look to Moscow and Beijing for support.

Should have stopped all aid after Morsi crucified the opposition when he was elected. Well of course, these animals don’t just crucify them, they tortured them. Why would anyone give money to these animals? I pray the GOP and Dems lose their shirts in 2014 and we get something with some spine, instead of one party rule, popularly known as a coalition or a gang. These people can’t stop Obamacare, NSA or anything else. Useless and impotent. Whoever thought gangsters were a good thing anyway?

Aid should have been cut years ago.

We’re borrowing money to give it to someone else and anyone who wants to continue it is no better than the morons who drove Detroit into the ground.

The body of the article says that the ‘conservatives’ that are divided are “conservative foreign policy experts” and “conservative commentators”.

Big frigging deal. A group of less than one hundred people at the most, likely one or two the fool who wrote this crap actually talked to.

I don’t think you’ll see real American Conservatives, those out there with jobs, homes, paying taxes - working, unlike our entitlement leeches and politicians, distraught and divided over fricking military aid to Egypt.

Let those Muslims kill each other. Not one of our soldiers, or our weapons, or money is worth any Muslim.

Watching this muckery by schmucks and just shaking my head.
In the first place, Putin will headbutt the iranians if they try to move on Egypt. Not gonna happen. And they really don’t want the sunni saudis in there either. This is a dance for the ages and we are on the wrong side from square one.

Yup. And now the only way out is to stop playing.

Part of me thinks this is all on purpose, part of me thinks it’s idiots doing what idiots do. But regardless Egypt is lost for a long time/ever. We best gets ta’ drillin and frackin’.

Can’t wait to see Zero scream when he’s forced to open all those ‘public’ lands up or be bodily thrown from office.

to drop the Egytian mlitary now is to turn the Suez Canal over to Russia and drive Israel into the sea. We need to cultivate them.

Bingo!

There are no Good Sides in Egypt.

The Military Arn't the Good Guys here, they simply oppose the Brotherhood.

Like Al-Qaeda Does.

The best thing for us to do now is to do nothing.

The funny thing is that Israel is in new talks with Hamas in Gaza and Hamas is in effect, the muslim brotherhood. I think the Israelis just recognize a certain stability that they aren’t going to find with an ever shifting Egypt.

Despite the fantasies of some, the muslim brotherhood isn’t going away. Its one of the largest if not THE largest multinational islamic groups. In fact, its pretty unlikely that they’ll be out of power in Egypt for long. Mubarak had his boot on their neck from the beginning but they’ve grown and won’t be controlled effectively.

When odumbo was speaking of Israel and said he has their back, I believe he meant that to mean he has a “target” on their back instead of he would “defend” their back. Lots of difference in that statement.

This whole Sh!t sandwich could have been avoided if we hadn't supported the Arab Spring in the first place.

If we hadn't played the Islamists game, but that isn't want Ubama and the eliets wanted, now Israel and your typical Egyptian is caught in the middle.

No the Brotherhood won't be going away, but neither will their opponents, I worry about a very real chance of Civil War in Egypt, we are almost here, that would be 2 Civil Wars going on at Israel's North and South border.

I can't shake the idea that this is what Ubama wants to get back at Israel, think about how unstable your country is when your neighbors are at war.

I am divided on further aid to Egypt.

Moscow & Beijing may be the best support Egypt can get to battle the islamists. Both have taken hard lines against islamists in the past. The USA, not so much, especially lately.

Obama clearly is not a reliable partner. If anything, he favors the islamists. Actually, he is on the wrong side of everything, & I think the rest of the World realizes this, plus he is a prolific liar, both to his enemies & his friends.

Long term, Hillary will probably follow Obama into the WH. She is at least as disliked & disrespected around the world as incompetent & unreliable. Her lying is easily on a par with Obama.

Egypt's struggle with islamists will not be won or lost any time soon. It could go on for decades or centuries, as it has in most muslim majority countries. For the military to win decisively, they're gonna have to do what they do best - kill people. Eleven more years of Obama/Clinton Politically Correct, hot/cold support could doom Egypt's military, the last bastion against islamism. One has only to look at Iraq & Afghanistan to see how Egypt will fair under the wing of Obama/Clinton.

Historically, US policy toward muslim countries changes with every wind change & election. Our leaders are consumed with religious & cultural sensitivities, things Putin & China don't give a damn about. Russian & Chinese foreign policy will not reverse with the next elections, as it can in the USA.

If I, as head of the Egyptian military, had to choose between Obama & Putin, Putin seems the more reliable partner, especially long term. Putin/China will have no problem with a military dictatorship. Too, I might want to send a harsh message to Obama that neither he nor the world can ignore. The Egyptian military HAS to be real POed at Mubarak's demise. And, if things go real bad with Putin/China, I can always get the US money/support back real easy by telling a few lies which they will be bound & eager to accept.

As I have often said, the ONLY people in the ME we should deal with is Israel. We owe them for being the scapegoat all these years and holding them back. People died because of our policy. And that comes with a price.

Arm them to the hilt, put troops at their disposal if needed along with full carrier battle groups. Because they are us.

The one and only reason we are in the ME is oil. We have more of that than anyone and now we know it. So there is no point in continuing any relationship with people that want us and Israel dead, None.

Sooner or later the rest of the world will learn what Russia did in Afghanistan and now us. You cannot bring that culture into the civilized world. So leave them to their Allah and cut all ties.

And make them aware that ANY attack on the west gets them remote controlled death.

Confessor Cromwell may wish to start a ministry.
