OAKLAND -- Some were attending a birthday party. Others were working at a downtown a hair salon or on their way to a fast-food restaurant.
In less than 24 hours over the weekend, 12 people were shot along Oakland streets -- three of them fatally, their deaths marking the city's 63rd, 64th and 65th homicides of the year.
As of Sunday evening, investigators had not identified a motive or a suspect in any of the shootings, and none appeared to be connected, police said.

The daytime shooting took place in front of Badd Boyz Hair Salon and Barbering in the 1700 block of Telegraph Avenue.
That's just a block away from this piece of crap, which opened closed up just the day before:
Oakland hopes Latham Square Plaza brings Uptown vibe to city center
Proponents hope that transforming one block of Telegraph Avenue at Broadway into a pocket park with weekly entertainment will bring a bit of Oakland's vibrant Uptown Arts District closer to the grittier city center.
But some property owners aren't yet on board. They fear that the plaza will disrupt traffic flow and be more popular with homeless people than hipsters.
Yes, a large city should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, but when a large city can't walk straight and just uses the gum to muck things up (occupying one block is not a "pocket park" or whatever pretentious euphemism is official these days), something's rather wrong.
Back to the shooting:
The woman's boyfriend chased the thief and was able to get the purse back, but the thief soon returned on a bicycle with a gun, police said.
Oakland's trying hard to promote bicycling! Glad to see something paying off.
Perps were damned Sarah Palin worshipping Tea Party Dittoheads, no doubt.
Of course not--if they were, Al Sharpton would've organized a hundred-city protest by now.
No, I think it’s more of a East Coast West Coast thing, I bet our West Coast Gangbangers got jealous of the Chicago Gangbangers getting more publicity for shooting more people. Homies bein competitive, wants ta even up da scorin.
I hit "Post." I ended up at a blank page. I've now returned to the post page, and will try again.
Of course that was sarcasm, does it even need the tag?
That's only because it sits on the Hayward Fault.
A story reporting 12 people killed doesn’t really tell much if it was a good thing or not. How many were decent God-fearing citizens that should be grieved for? How many were garbage people that should put a very slight smile on our faces by knowing they’re removed from society?
This is lazy journalism that never gives us the breakdown.
There you have it, the future’s here: trash taking out trash!
Fence them in, give them plenty of guns and ammo and dope, let them have at it.
Local PD slang is "Oakland: the self-cleaning oven".
Blood in-Blood out.
Cool.... now Chicago has some competition!!
It’s Obama’s country now.... bring in the clowns.
If you hate the U.S. legal system (which from your comments you do), why don't you move to a country more suited to your liking.
You can taste the boosterism from here.
They can sink all the money they want into downtown restaurants and new apartment complexes, but until they deal with the thug element, it is all for naught.
Oakland needs real industries again, real jobs, and a real police presence.
The problem is that for every one who dies, three are born.
Believe me, it ain't that way in flyover country.

Oakland, California, the fifth-most crime ridden city in America, faced a $32 million budget deficit last year. It closed the gap by dismissing a fourth of its police force, more than 200 officers.
Untouched was the $17.3 million that the city pays to stage 10 games a season for the National Football League's Oakland Raiders and to host Major League Baseball's Athletics in the O.co Coliseum.

I watched Dark Days last night with a friend. It’s a documentary about people who’d been living in the subway tunnels of NYC for 10-20 years.
Amtrak kicked them out because “2 people” had died within a year (one froze to death and the other got hit by a train). One of the denizen’s estimate is that 80 percent of them were crack.
One resident got in a beef with another and the other guy burned his shack down.
But considering it’s NYC, the crime, rodent problem, and health seems to be better down there than among the general populace.
