DETROIT (WJBK) -
Michigan's "stand your ground" law is practically the same as the Florida law, and there are a lot of people hoping that a review leads to it being repealed.
However, we spoke with one Detroit man who said "stand your ground" quite possibly saved his life and without a doubt kept him out of prison.
"If it wasn't for [the] 'stand your ground' law, right now I would be in jail, and my life could've been taken at that point," said Darrell Standberry.
It happened nearly two years ago, but Standberry remembers like it was yesterday the moment he fatally shot a man trying to steal his SUV.
"I got out of the vehicle to go inside to pay for gas," he said. "I turned back and looked, and he was already in the driver's seat of my vehicle."
"He turned around and looked and [saw] that I was still standing there, and that's when he reached in his pocket to pull out his weapon. And I pulled out my weapon, and I fired one shot. And he took off in my vehicle."
His ride was wrecked, the carjacker was dead, and Standberry was arrested. He was never charged with a crime, and he said it's thanks to "stand your ground".
Not everyone is that happy with the law.

As is to be expected, since black people are vastly more likely to be victims of crime than white people.
Let's guess who in this story would have preferred that Michigan didn't have a stand your ground law.
Following the Zimmerman trial, 57 county sheriffs in a recent meeting of Florida sheriffs unanimously acclaimed support for SYGA. There are 67 counties in Florida. Why the other 10 were not in attendance, I do not know.
Those unhappy with SYG would of course be happier if this man tried to outrun a 1,300 feet per second handgun round fired at him as he exercised his duty to retreat from the carjacker. Reminiscent of England where burglars are free to steal your TV as you are sitting in your recliner watching it.
What saved Mr. Standberry’s life was the “Shall Issue” law that went into effect back around 2002. Prior to that it was almost impossible to get a CCW permit in the city of Detroit unless you were on the city council or had connections within the council.
