Bill would move U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem

A bill introduced in the U.S. House would move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The Capital of the State of Israel Act is sponsored by a bipartisan group of five representatives, the Israeli news agency Ynetnews reported Saturday. They say the move would show U.S. support for Israel and would save money.

The bill recommends the United States convert the Tel Aviv Embassy to a consulate or sell it.

The sponsors are Trent Franks, R-Ariz., Brad Sherman, D-Calif., Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., Gene Green, D-Texas, and Juan Vargas, D-Calif. They cite both political and religious reasons for the move.

All previous Presidents have as well. No international embassy remains in Jerusalem. We have a consulate in Jerusalem.

I heard of a bill like this being passed in the mid-1990s, and then-president Clinton postponed its implementation indefinitely, citing security concerns, until most folks forgot about it. What’s different this time?

Israel should move its US embassy to Philadelphia,
and refuse to have it in Washington.

See “Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995.”

Similar bill also reran as “Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act of 2011,” and I’m sure there are others.

No Republican presidential candidate has been serious about it, much less Democrat, but they all promise before they’re elected.

The Jerusalem Embassy Act (1995), still in force.

Due to the obvious Constitutional issues, the Act contains a Waiver clause. “All the Presidents serving in office during this period have determined moving forward with the relocation would be detrimental to U.S. national security concerns and opted to issue waivers suspending any action on this front. A re-assessment has to take place every six months...”

They already passed a similar resolution years ago. Nothing will happen.

I can only surmise that the Clown opposes this bill.

If by "the Clown," you mean the current occupant of the White House, I'm fairly sure you would be right.

For one thing, the 'Rat Convention last year had to have a "Jerusalem is the capital of Israel" platform plank rammed down their collective throats by connived voice vote. If his constituency can't recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, there seems little likelihood that they would agree to the embassy move.

Furthermore, Obama and friends would think that supporting an embassy move would tee off the Palestinians who, according to their view, are in "peace negotiations" now and can't be offended by such "distractions."

This isn’t the first time nills have been introduced and passed to move the embassy. gw vetoed one as well even though it was one of his campaign promises.
