Activists petitioning for Toad’s to cancel Ted Nugent show find no one home

Community activists hoping to convince Toad’s Place president and owner Brian Phelps to cancel the Ted Nugent concert scheduled for Tuesday stopped by the York Street rock club Wednesday night with petitions signed by 2,500 like-minded people.

They can keep hoping — but on Wednesday, all they encountered was a locked door.
.
.
Fair also said that if there is no dialogue and the show is not cancelled, peaceful protesters will turn out the evening of the show.

“We’re making every effort at dialogue first,” said Williams.

“I want to sit down and actually have a decent conversation with him,” Fair said of Phelps. “So our plan is to come back tomorrow then ... I called him a couple of times” but “he hasn’t picked up.”
.
.
“She can give the petitions to someone” in the office, Phelps said. “I’m not really interested in meeting with her.
.
.
“It’s not possible to be neutral,” Williams said of the suggestion that Phelps might believe Toad’s is a business that is simply presenting a show that some people want to see. “You cannot be neutral on a moving train.”

Said Fair, “How would people feel if (Nugent) were going to Newtown to hold a gun rally?”

Near as I can tell, they want all people who they disagree with to be executed.

How would I feel if the Nuge held a Gun Rally ?

Sounds like fun: I’d go. . . strap my Mosin across my back openly. . .

I love Toads. I even have the TeeShirt. I hope they tell the community communists to wango-de-tango back under their rock.

I am not a fan of Nugent’s music, but if I were in NewHaven I would be at the concert and cheer him on.

“We’re making every effort at dialogue first,” said Williams.

Dialogue first? Then what comes second? I have a feeling Nugent and the club owner might need to defend themselves. They should be prepared.

A lot of people would think it's a good idea. She'd be surprised at the turnout. Crushed, hopefully.

“We’re making every effort at dialogue first,” said Williams.

Any criminal holding a gun to your face in a dark parking lot could say the same thing.

The code word "dialogue" always means that they shout a list of demands, and the other party agrees to them.

Har har. Good for Phelps. *Nothing* pisses off these people more than being ignored. The perfect way to handle it.

Here's the "petition":

We, the undersigned, ask that out of respect for the New Haven community, which is experiencing a great deal of grief as a result of the Trayvon Martin verdict, you cancel the Ted Nugent show scheduled for August 6th.

Some of the distasteful things that Mr. Nugent has said in the aftermath of the verdict are about Trayvon, a murdered child are:

• Trayvon Martin, was a “17-year-old dope smoking, racist gangsta wannabe."

• “Trayvon had no reason not to attack, because it was the standard thug thing to do.”

New Haven is a community coming together in the aftermath of the Trial of George Zimmerman. Actions across the city—from rallies to marches to discussions—have been attended by individuals of multiple races and ethnicities and we feel that Mr. Nugent, who has a right to express his opinion, is not someone who operates in the spirit that this city does.

We understand that you may consider this a First Amendment issue, and while Mr. Nugent has a right to his speech that right does not require that he do so here. As a small business owner in New Haven we ask that you support those of us bringing together community not the hate speech of Mr. Nugent.

Gargabe.

"Activists" as in Ernst Roehm's "Brownshirts?"

Haven't we seen this movie in an early 1930s newsreel somewhere?

“and while Mr. Nugent has a right to his speech that right does not require that he do so here.”

And while TrayDmark had a right to walk on a street, that right did not require that he do so in Zimmerman’s neighborhood, Sanford, Florida, America, North or South America....

“How would people feel if (Nugent) were going to Newtown to hold a gun rally?”

I imagine I’d feel much safer there than anywhere on Detroit’s liberal-infested streets.
