The Plain Dealer in Cleveland cut about a third of its newsroom staff Wednesday, months after announcing it was reducing home delivery of the newspaper.
About 50 reporters, photographers, page designers and other Newspaper Guild-covered employees received layoff notices, according to the guild.

The paper is less than 1/3 the size it was when I was young. Last year, they were tossing a paper on my driveway every Sunday morning. I think it was so they could tell advertisers that they were reaching a lot of people. They’d call me a few times a year, trying to get me to subscribe. I finally told one young guy that the paper was just too left wing for me. He said he heard that a lot, and understood.
Great news for the righteous.
In my much younger days I was a delivery boy for both the Plain Dealer in the morning and the Press in the afternoon. Couldn’t make much money on the Press but the Plain Dealer got me $25-30 every two weeks.

Same as the Akron Reekin’ Urinal, which if anything is far more overtly left wing than the PD (but with a better sports section). A few years ago I told a persistent telephone solicitor who would not take a simple “no, not interested” for an answer that with the advent of the internet I can now easily read Pravda online. I hung up after giving him a few seconds to be in stunned (and probably confused “what’s Pravda?”) silence.

It means they’ve given up on home delivery except for three times a week, though the article mentions “bonus” Sunday delivery too, so that would mean four days a week if true.
At any rate, as these rags go bankrupt, one of their last gasp steps is to reduce home delivery. The reason they do it three days a week is because they have to deliver all of those flyers. The papers are making almost all of their money now on being paid to print and deliver the sales flyers. Basically, the local papers are turning into penny shoppers.
